Ninth Inning RBIs Power Vermont Past Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. - The Vermont Mountaineers topped the Danbury Westerners, 8-6 on Thursday in a back-and-forth thriller in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Mountaineers outfielder Abdel Guadalupe (Davie, Fla./Broward) hit a go-ahead single in the top of the ninth to break a 6-6 tie and give Vermont a lead. Guadalupe hit a soft fly ball to center field that got down for a base hit, scoring pinch runner David Sarmiento (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. Thomas) to put the Mountaineers up 7-6. Bryce Aldridge (Bloomington, Ind./Wabash) followed that up with an RBI single, scoring Guadalupe.

The two teams combined for six home runs in the game.

Mountaineers starter Davis Mikell (Williston, Vt./Castleton) pitched well through three innings, but struggled and was taken out in the fourth. The native Vermonter went three and two thirds innings, giving up five earned runs, whiling striking out three and allowing four hits.

Danbury started lefty Cooper Wallace (Jacksonville, Fla./Flagler College). The southpaw pitched five full innings, allowing three runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking two.

Vermont got the scoring started with a leadoff homerun in the top of the fourth by third baseman Brett Malm (Medford, N.Y./Adelphi).

The Westerners responded quickly in the bottom half of the fourth with a matching solo homerun by outfielder Giovanni Dingcong (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Thomas Aquinas), tying the game at one. Danbury continued the in the fourth, making it 3-1 with a two-run double by Jake Wilson (New Lowell, Ontario/Bowling Green St).

Reese Robinson (Dayton, Ohio/Xavier) came in in relief later in the inning and walked his first batter before giving up a two-run single to Randy Tavares (Bronx, N.Y./Marist), increasing the Danbury lead to 5-1.

In the fifth, the Mountaineers cut the deficit back to 5-3 after two solo homeruns by Nick Ward (Kennett Square, Pa./West Chester U) and Jeffery Scott (Forest, Ind./Bowling Green St.).

In the top of the seventh, Vermont again put a run on the board, making it 5-4, with Bryce Aldridge (Bloomington, Ind./Wabash) scoring from third on a wild pitch by Westerners relief pitcher Mike Krieger (Derby, Conn./Long Island U).

Ryan Hoogerwerf (Allen, Texas/U of Portland) hit a pinch-hit, go ahead two-run homer in the eighth inning, making it 6-5 Vermont.

But the Westerners wouldn't go away, as Javier Valdes Jr. (Miami, Fla./FIU) hit a game-tying home run off of reliever Luis Acosta (Edinburg, Texas/Texas Rio Grande) in the bottom of the eighth.

Ryan Fernandez picked up a clutch save in the ninth after a late threat from Danbury.

Luis Acosta (Edinburg, Texas/ Texas Rio Grande Valley) picked up his first win of the season after giving up one run on one hit over an inning of relief.

Luke Cooksey (St. Augustine, Florida/ Flagler), who allowed two runs on four hits over one and one third inning of relief, suffered the loss for Danbury.

The Mountaineers (4-3) will travel to White River Junction on Friday to take on the Upper Valley Nighthawks at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through the NECBL Broadcast Network.
