New Schedule Brings West Division Teams to McBride
When you attended a Roosters game during the 2004 season, chances are you watched a game between Richmond and an East Division rival. Last season, teams played 90 of their 96 games against division opponents. The only team from the West Division that Richmond faced was Rockford. The Roosters traveled to Rockford for a series in July and then hosted the RiverHawks in early August. This season, things will be different. In the off season, team owners unanimously approved going back to the old style of schedule, like2003, in which all teams played at least one three-game series home and away against every team in the Frontier League.
Of Richmond's 96 games this summer, 60 will be against the East Division and 36 against the West Division. The Roosters play 12 games each against East Division teams (Chillicothe, Washington, Ohio Valley, Evansville and Florence), with six games being played at McBride Stadium and the other six at the opponents' ballpark. Richmond faces each West Division squad (Kalamazoo, Rockford, River City, Windy City, Gateway and Mid-Missouri) six times with a series at home and away.
Currently, the Roosters are in the middle of a 12-game stretch of interdivisional games against the West Division. The defending champion Rockford RiverHawks came to McBride from June 14-16. The Roosters recently returned from playing on the road against another West Division squad, Kalamazoo. Richmond won the series for their second series win of the 2005 season. Richmond plays another team from the West, Windy City, from June 21-23 at McBride, and then travels to Gateway (Sauget, Illinois) for three games.
Q & A with Josh Hollingsworth
Josh is a veteran on the Richmond Roosters. He has suffered through some injuries but is finally taking care of business at the plate. He is a leader in the clubhouse and on the field with 10 home runs already this season to lead the Frontier League.
Q: You've been hurt several times in the past. Are you healthy now?
A: I'm not entirely healthy. I still hurt, but my shoulders are better and I've been able to swing the bat.
Q: Speaking of swinging the bat, you're at the top of the league in home runs. You have got to be happy about that.
A: It feels good to hit home runs especially now that my shoulders aren't hurt. It's more fun when we win though. Tony (Sanguinetti) and I have hit back-to-back shots twice this year and it's been exciting, but our team lost both times. It's definitely fun to hit homers, but I'd rather get a win for the team.
Q: You are normally a right-handed hitter, but you hit left-handed when you were hurt and still sometimes take batting practice left-handed. Does it help when you take swings from both sides?
A: Well, I used to swing left-handed only because I was hurt. I couldn't swing from the right side because of the injury to my shoulder. I played through it, but now I continue to take swings left-handed because it helps with my balance. When I swing left-handed, it works all the muscles in the opposite direction from when I bat right-handed. It also makes me practice using my right eye as the lead eye rather than my left. You won't see me switch hitting anytime soon though.
Q: You have said more than once that you want to steal more bases this year. You even stole home earlier this year. What was going through your head?
A: It was a close game and we had to take a chance to scratch a run across. Mong (Manager, Chris Mongiardo) had told us to be aggressive and the pitcher had a slow move to the plate. He was a left-hander and was going from his full motion. As soon as he moved his foot, I took off and managed to beat the tag at home for the run. Stealing helps win games and gives other guys opportunities to drive you in.
Q: Your college, Florida Southern, won the Division 2 Championships in baseball this year. What do you think about that?
A: I think it's awesome. I stay in touch with some guys there and I'm really happy for them. It's a really good school for baseball.
Q: You were one of the players featured on the Meineke Car Care Baseball Card Strip that was a giveaway during the Rockford series. What's it like to have your own card?
A: I thought it was pretty cool. The cards are funny to look at. I'll probably send some home to my family.
