Richmond Roosters News Release

Kalamazoo, Michigan - Richmond lost 8-7 on Sunday night and failed to sweep the Kalamazoo Kings. The Roosters rallied from a five-run deficit and managed to force extra innings, but couldn't hold off the Kings in the end.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Kalamazoo pushed four runs across the plate. Two Kings scored on RBI singles by Pete Pirman and Tim Baywal, then another two scored on a 2 RBI double by Justin McClain. Pirman got his second RBI hit of the game, a double in the fourth that scored Nick Rogers from first and extended the lead to 5-0. Ty Herriott led off the fifth inning with a solo home run. Another run scored in the same inning when Kevin White singled down the left field line to score Hector Urena and cut the lead to 5-2.

Joe Cuervo hit a solo home run in the sixth, his third in five days, over the left field wall to bring the Roosters within two runs at 5-3. The power happy Roosters then got another home run from Alex Rybczak, a three-run blast and his first as a professional, to rally the team from behind for the second day in a row and take the lead at 6-5. It was the third home run of the night for Richmond and the ninth of the series. The Kings retook the lead, 7-6, in their half of the sixth with a two-run jack from Pirman, his third and fourth RBI of the day.

Mike Reese singled to lead off the ninth for Richmond, then went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hector Urena. Kevin White grounded the ball to third base in the next at-bat but Justin McClain made a throwing error to first which allowed Reese to score and tie the game 7-7. That run would force extra innings with neither team able to push a run across until the bottom of the 11th. Tim Brown doubled to put a runner in scoring position with only one out. Justin McClain came up two batters later and managed to get a RBI single past a diving Josh Hollingsworth to end the game and give Kalamazoo the win at 8-7. The Roosters are now 0-3 in extra inning games, while the Kings are 4-0. O.J. Shanks (0-1) took the loss for Richmond while Josh Daws (3-1) earned the win.

The Roosters will have a day off on Monday before beginning a three-game series against the Windy City Thunderbolts on Tuesday. Rick Weber (0-0, 6.00 ERA) will be the starter for Richmond in the first game which starts at 6:35 pm (Indiana time).
