Fenton, Mo. (Wednesday, May 27th, 2015) -- Minnesota United fell out of the U.S. Open Cup early at the hands of Saint Louis FC. A second half goal by J.C. Banks gave United the lead, but a late equalizer for Saint Louis sent the game to extra time, where the hosts would win in a shootout.
A tense first half saw both teams feel each other out, trying to find exploitable weaknesses. Neither side was able to break through in the first 45 minutes, but both had a few promising chances that tested the defenders.
The second half opened up and started favorably for Minnesota. United was able to create several early chances, and was finally able to find the back of the net in the 53rd minute. Forward Christian Ramirez put a shot off the far post that fell to the feet of midfielder J.C. Banks. Despite being under pressure, Banks made a calm finish to score his first goal with the club and give United the lead.
The advantage would hold until late in the match as Saint Louis was desperately pressing for a goal. Midfielder Charles Renken cut into the Minnesota penalty area and was taken down by a sliding challenge from Tyler Polak. Bryan Gaul stepped up for Saint Louis and tucked home the equalizer.
After 90 minutes, the two teams played an additional 30 to try to find an overtime winner. Though neither side was able to break through, a foul cost Saint Louis in the second half of extra time. After getting taken down by Brian Kallman, Gaul retaliated by kicking Kallman, earning the goal scorer a swift red card and forcing his side to play a man down.
The sides could not be separated after 120 minutes and players set up for the penalty shootout. Minnesota's Daniel Mendes shot first, but goalkeeper Mark Pais made the save. Saint Louis would convert its shot, followed by United's Ibson putting his attempt over the crossbar. Miguel Ibarra was able to convert his attempt, but Saint Louis' perfect three had put United on the ropes. Christian Ramirez was able to beat Pais but struck the post, ending United's Cup run early.
Minnesota returns home for league play with its Spring Championship hopes on the line as it takes on the New York Cosmos on Saturday May 30th as Spanish legend Raúl makes his first trip to Minnesota. Tickets are available by calling 763.4SOCCER or visiting MNUnitedFC.com/tickets.
