Unger Not Returning as Oilers' Coach
May 21, 2003 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Tulsa Oilers News Release
TULSA, OK- The Tulsa Oilers of the Central Hockey League announced today that head coach Garry Unger will not return behind the bench for the upcoming 2003-2004 season. Unger and Oilers owner Jeff Lund were unable to agree to terms on a new contract that would allow Unger to remain the coach of the Oilers.
"Garry's been not only an ambassador to the game of hockey, but a pillar in the foundation of Oilers hockey," said Lund. "We wish him the best, whatever the future brings for he and his family. I would like to personally thank Garry for his sacrifices and contributions he has made to our organization over the last several years.
Unger had spent a total of seven seasons as the coach of the Oilers, compiling a record of 230-187-31 and led Tulsa to their only CHL championship following the 1992-93 season. Unger's 292 CHL victories (Unger spent two seasons, 97/98 and 98/99, as the coach of the New Mexico Scorpions) rank him second in league history and his 568 games coached are the most-ever in the CHL. Last season Unger led the Oilers to an 18-2 start, the best in franchise history, but finished the season with a record of 37-22-5 and out of the playoffs for the second straight season.
"The disappointing part is I have invested a lot in this community, not only on the ice but off it as well," said Unger. "Having spent the better part of the last 11 years in Tulsa, it makes it awful hard to move.
Unger has been offered a front office position with the Oilers, but is currently unsure of what his future holds.
"I'm weighing my options," said Unger. "I've had some other offers to continue coaching and I have to decide whether I want to coach or move into the front office.
The Oilers will now conduct a nationwide search for Unger's replacement and hope that a new coach will be in place soon.
