CHARLESTON, WV - West Virginia scored three unearned runs, including a Taylor Gushue inside-the-park home run, as the Power topped the BlueClaws 4-2 on Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park.
West Virginia (38-17/75-49) has now taken two of the first three games in the series from the BlueClaws (30-25/63-60). Lakewood is now eight games in back of the Power with 15 games remaining in the season, their largest deficit of the second half.
Lakewood starter Tyler Viza (4-9) pitched a complete game (eight innings) and gave up four runs, but only one was earned. Viza is 0-7 in his last nine starts but has a 2.52 ERA in those games as the BlueClaws have scored a total of 17 runs.
West Virginia starter Alex McRae (6-9) earned the win, allowing one run over seven innings. Edgar Santana got his first save allowing one run in two innings of relief.
The Power opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Taylor Gushue before a Herlis Rodriguez RBI single tied the game for the BlueClaws in the fourth inning. West Virginia re-claimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. Tito Polo led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout before a Chase Simpson SAC fly put the Power ahead 2-1.
Perhaps the biggest hit of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning. With two out and a runner at second base, Tyler Filliben hit a groundball down the line, fair, and into the Lakewood bullpen. Left fielder Cord Sandberg put both hands up, signaling he thought the ball was dead, but the umpires ruled that the ball was still live. Filliben never stopped running and rounded the bases for an inside-the-park home run that put the Power up 4-1. They would win it 4-2.
Drew Stankiewicz went 2-4 for the BlueClaws. Damek Tomscha and Jiandido Tromp each went 0-3 and saw their hitting streaks end at seven games.
The teams finish their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05. RHP Ranfi Casimiro (7-7) starts for Lakewood against West Virginia RHP Colten Brewer (4-9).
