UFL, Mountain Lions Announce 2011 Schedule
August 16, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Sacramento Mountain Lions News Release
SACRAMENTO, CA - Tuesday, August 16 - The United Football League will play its third season in 2011 during the course of seven weeks leading up to a Championship Game to be played in one of the league's four markets.
The Sacramento Mountain Lions will open the season at Hornet Stadium against visiting Las Vegas at 7:30 p.m. on September 17.
The rest of the Mountain Lions home schedule consists of a battle with the Omaha Nighthawks on October 1 at 4 p.m. and a contest against the Virginia Destroyers on Oct. 15 at 4 p.m. This will be the first UFL meeting between Sacramento head coach DENNIS GREEN and Virginia head coach MARTY SCHOTTENHEIMER. The two men were head coaches in the NFL for a combined 34 years; both last serving as a head coach following the 2006-07 NFL season.
Green and Schottenheimer coached against each other in Green's final game as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, on December 31, 2006. Schottenheimer's San Diego Chargers won the game 27-20. This was also the final regular season game for Schottenheimer as a head coach in the NFL.
Green and the Mountain Lions will take on the two-time reigning champion Las Vegas Locos in the season opener. Las Vegas is coached by former NFL head coach JIM FASSEL.
"It is very exciting to open the 2011 season with two home games," Green said. "The atmosphere in Sacramento for home games last year was fun for the fans and the community. So with three of the first four games at home, we see this as an opportunity to get off to a good start and challenge for the UFL championship."
The Mountain Lions averaged about 18,250 fans per game for their four home games in 2010.
The top two teams in the standings at the end of a six-game campaign will meet for the William Hambrecht Trophy on November 4 or 5. The team that sets the early pace on the field, attracts the most passionate fans to the stands, and boasts the most active social media presence will earn the right to host the season finale, according to league officials.
"In a six-game season, every game counts and not only is there no room for a losing streak, but our teams will be in playoff mode right from the opening kickoff," said UFL Commissioner MICHAEL HUYGHUE. "That will make for some tense and exciting games to keep fans on the edge of their seats."
