
U.S. Open Cup fever continues

RICHMOND, VA - (Tuesday, June 28, 2005) - The 2005 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will commence it's second round of action on Wednesday, June 29th, with 16 teams competing for advancement into the third round. The Richmond Kickers Future (PDL) will travel to Virginia Beach to take on the professional Virginia Beach Mariners of the USL First Division (formerly the A-League). Game time is set for 7:30pm at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex.
The amateur Kickers Future, coached by Martin Dell, currently rest a top of the Mid Atlantic Division of the Premier Development League (PDL) with a 9-0-2 record, not having seen defeat this season. The Virginia Beach Mariners reside in 11th place in the twelve-team USL First Division with a 2-9-4 record. The winner of this clash will meet the Rochester Rhinos (USL1) at Frontier Field in Rochester, NY on Wednesday, July 13th at 7:30pm in the U.S. Open Cup Third Round.
The Third Round will see the eight (8) advancing teams from the second round battle a mixture of professional teams from the USL First Division (4) and Major League Soccer (4). The Richmond Kickers (USL1) are one of those four USL First Division teams that enter the tournament in the 3rd round and will face the winner of the second round match (this Wednesday) between the Ocean City Barons (PDL) vs. Long Island Rough Riders (USL2). The game will be played at SportsBackers Stadium in Richmond, VA on Wed., July 13th at 7:00pm.
Dating back to 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in the United States and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the 90-year old, single-elimination domestic cup competition gives any affiliated team in the United States a chance at winning the title of "United States Club Champions."
