U.S. Nat'l Under-17 Team Falls to Marquette, 4-3

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped a seesaw battle by the score of 4-3 to the Marqutte Rangers in a North American Hockey League North Division contest tonight at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

The National Team jumped out to a 1-0 lead when forward Patrick Gaul (Pittsburgh, Pa.) collected a long feed from Ryan Schnell (Cary, Ill.) and beat Marquette goaltender Matt Brooker by firing the puck into the upper right corner of the net.

The Rangers evened the score with a Nic Weight tally at 3:55 of the night's second frame. Team USA regained the lead at the 13:12 mark of the period when forward Danny Kristo (Eden Prairie, Minn.) skated down the right wing and blasted a shot past Brooker. Kristo's shot went through the net and play continued. Upon further review at the next stoppage of play Kristo was awarded his 12th goal on the season and the National Team claimed the 2-1 advantage. Marquette again evened the score with a goal from Rangers' forward Christopher Smith coming with 27 seconds to play in the stanza.

Schnell added a goal to his prior assist at 8:10 of the third period only to be matched by a Rangers goal 1:42 later which knotted the match at 3-3. The Rangers took its first lead of the night with a power-play blast from the right point at 14:22 of the final frame. The Rangers' fourth goal would turn out to be the game winner as Marquette was able to skate away with the 4-3 road victory.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will try to split the weekend series with the Rangers tomorrow evening at 7:00 p.m. EST when Team USA again meets Marqutte at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube.

NOTES: The U.S. National Under-17 Team was without its leadings scorers Jordan Schroeder (Lakeville, Minn.) and Vinny Saponari (Powder Springs, Ga.) along with goaltender Nick Maricic (Alta Loma, Calif.) who are all with U.S. National Under-18 Team for its game versus Colorado College on Saturday, January 20 in Colorado Springs, Colo. ... USA forward Richard Manley (South Buffalo, N.Y.) and defenseman Ryan Grimshaw (Rochester, N.Y.) will be out of the National Team lineup indefinatly due to injury.
