U.S. Nat'l U18 Team Routs Indiana, 10-2

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Bill Arnold (Needham, Mass.), who notched two goals, was one of nine different players to score for the U.S. National Under-18 Team as it downed the Indiana Ice, 10-2, here tonight in its last regular-season game of the 2009-10 season.

Team USA took advantage of a power play when Arnold popped the puck through a net-front scramble and past netminder Cab Morris at 6:45 of the first period. Rocco Grimaldi (Rossmoor, Calif.) doubled the U.S. lead when he collected his own rebound and snapped the puck past Morris from the middle slot. Indiana answered back at 12:23 when Max Cook one-timed Nick Bailen's feed past a sprawling Andy Iles (Ithaca, N.Y.). Derek Forbort (Duluth, Minn.) made it 3-1 when his wrister from the left faceoff circle snuck past Morris at 15:29.

Arnold gave the U.S. a 4-1 advantage when he stripped a defenseman of the puck, turned around and wired a wrist shot over the outstretched glove of Morris at 4:28 of the second stanza. Team USA received a four-goal cushion at the 8:28 mark when Nick Shore (Denver, Colo.) fed a streaking Adam Clendening (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), who wristed the puck past diving goaltender Casey DeSmith, who relieved Morris earlier in the period. Jarred Tinordi (Millersville, Md.) added yet another goal for the U.S. when his centering feed caught a deflection and slipped past DeSmith just 2:08 later. Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) slid home a rebound from the top of the crease with 2:37 remaining in the frame to close out Team USA's four-goal period.

The Ice pulled DeSmith early in the third frame to try and capitalize on an offensive zone faceoff, however the U.S. won the draw and Matthew Nieto (Long Beach, Calif.) fought through two defenders and slid the puck into the empty net at the 1:29 mark to make it 8-1. In a similar situation, the Ice pulled DeSmith, but that resulted in another U.S. goal as Chase Balisy (Fullerton, Calif.) deposited the puck in the empty cage at 6:43. Indiana's Chris Martin scored on a rebound at 9:51, however just 1:42 later, Tyler Biggs (Cincinnati, Ohio) converted on a centering feed from Grimaldi to account for the 10-2 final.

Iles made 30 stops on the night to earn the win.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team will prepare for the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-18 Championship from March 22-April 3 at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube before traveling to the tournament sites in Minsk and Bobruisk, Belarus, for the pre-tournament camp. The final roster for the 2010 U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team is expected to be announced on April 1.
