
U.S. National U18 Team Falls To Michigan State, 8-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) and Brandon Saad (Gibsonia, Pa.) scored second-period goals for Team USA, but the U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to Michigan State University, 8-2, here tonight at Munn Ice Arena.
Michigan State tallied three first-period markers, with Brock Shelgren opening the scoring at 1:24. Andy Iles (Ithaca, N.Y.) got the start for Team USA, but left the contest after surrendering the game's first goal. Colin Stevens (Niskayuna, N.Y.) played between the U.S. pipes for the remainder of the game. The Spartans then took a 2-0 lead on a Daultan Leveille goal at 9:10 and Brett Perlini's tally at 18:33 ended the stanza's scoring.
In the middle frame, Moffatt cut Michigan State's lead to 3-1 after he sent a Michael Mersch (Park Ridge, Ill.) pass through Michigan State goaltender Bobby Jarosz. Nick Sucharski answered for the Spartans 1:30 later to regain the three-goal lead, while Mike Merrifield's tally at 9:19 gave Michigan State a 5-1 advantage. Saad made it a 5-2 game after collecting a Michael Vilardo (Geneva, Ill.) pass and firing a shot past Jarosz. Michigan State's Derek Grant scored at 18:36 of the frame to give the Spartans a 6-2 lead after two periods.
Michigan State netted two more goals in the third period, with Corey Tropp scoring at 11:18 and Daultan Leveille tallying his second marker at 12:33 to account for the 8-2 final.
Stevens collected 22 saves in the game, while Jarosz and Kyle McMahon, who entered with 1:59 remaining in the game, combined for 24 saves.
The U.S. National Under-18 Team returns to United States Hockey League action Friday (Jan. 8) when it visits the Green Bay Gamblers and continues its NCAA Division I schedule against the University of Wisconsin Saturday (Jan. 9).
NOTES: Colin Stevens, a member of the Boston Jr. Bruins of the Eastern Junior Hockey League, was added to the U.S. National Under-18 Team's roster to fill in for regular netminder Jack Campbell (Port Huron, Mich.). Campbell and Team USA teammate Jason Zucker (Las Vegas, Nev.) are currently playing at the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship with the U.S. National Junior Team. Team USA plays Canada in the gold-medal game Tuesday (Jan. 5) at 8 p.m. EST. The game will be televised live on the NHL Network (U.S.).
