Two Wave stars on All-MISL teams
April 23, 2008 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE (April 23, 2008) -- Only five other players have been named first-team All-MISL as often as the Milwaukee Wave's Greg Howes, who picked up his sixth consecutive honor this season.
Chosen All-MISL for the first time was midfielder/forward Marcio Leite, who was placed on the second team in balloting by coaches, media and public relations staff.
"The finished 1-2 on our team in scoring and both were our main offensive threats," said Wave head coach Keith Tozer. "They're a big reason why we finished as well as we did."
Howes joins Hector Marinaro (10 selections), former Wave goalkeeper Victor Nogueira (nine), Jamie Swanner (six), Zoran Karic (six) and Genoni Martinez (six) as players with this many first-team selections. Records include the current MISL and its forerunners, the National Professional Soccer League and the American Indoor Soccer Association.
The 31-year-old forward led the league in points (130), goals (45) and assists (32) while helping the Wave to a 22-8 mark, tied with Detroit for tops in the league. He scored a season-best nine points (4 2PG, 1A) at Monterrey on Jan. 10, and had at least five points in each of the Wave's last nine regular season games. Howes went on to add nine more points in the Wave's two playoff games.
Leite, just 23, was first-team All-Rookie last season, when he scored 50 points. He played in all 30 games this year and tallied 80 points, eighth in the league. Leite was one of just six players in the league with at least 20 goals and 20 assists.
His season-high output was nine points, on Nov. 29 at Monterrey, and he shared the team lead with four game-winning goals.
"Greg had another great season, and Marcio, in only his second year, has progressed at a very good pace," Tozer said.
Also on the first team were goalkeeper Sagu (Baltimore), defenders Genoni Martinez (Monterrey) and Droo Callahan (Detroit) and forward/midfielders Dino Delevski (Monterrey) and Dan Antoniuk (New Jersey).
Second-team players were goalkeeper Danny Waltman (Detroit), defenders P.J. Wakefield (Baltimore) and Pat Morris (Philadelphia), and forward/midfielders Denison Cabral (Baltimore) and Jamar Beasley (Detroit).
Individual award winners for this season, including MVP and Coach of the Year, will be announced Friday at the MISL Championship Final Press Luncheon. That event is scheduled for noon in Room 101 AB at the Midwest Airlines Center.
