Two Three-Run Innings Sink Snakes

The Calgary Vipers gave up three runs in both the first and third innings and wered defeated 7-4 by the Victoria Seals at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers attempted a comeback and got within two runs after trailing by six but failed to get any closer. With the loss Calgary drops to 15-10 and has their lead in the Golden Baseball League's North Division trim to one game.

Isaac Hess (4-0) recorded the win for the Seals in tossing six and two third innings while striking out four. Javier Garcia (7) picked up the save coming into the game in the eighth inning with the bases loaded, one out, and not giving up a run. Joe Sergent (2-2) took the loss for Calgary in giving up five earned runs in his six innings pitched.

At the plate for the Snakes Fehlandt Lentini recorded the rare steal of home plate while going three-for-five with two doubles and runs batted in. Dillon O'Krane also had two doubles in going two-for-four.

National Hockey League All-Star Adrian Aucoin was on hand to throw out the game's first pitch while also joining the team for batting practice before the game.

Victoria jumped onto the scoreboard in a big way in the top of the first inning as Trevor Davidson doubled, both Sergio Pedroza and Jamar Hill walked to load the bases, and Josh Arhart knocked in two runs with a two-bagger. Brian Rios rounded out the scoring with a run batted in groundout to make the score 3-0.

The Seals doubled their lead to 6-0 in the third inning as Wilver Perez reached on an error, Pedroza singled, Hill doubled both runners home, and Rios cashed one with a base hit for the three runs in total.

Calgary scratched across a run in the bottom of the frame as with two outs Fehlandt Lentini singled, as did Nelson Castro to put runners at the corners. When a pickoff attempt from the pitcher Hess went over to first base Lentini stole home for the 6-1 score.

The Vipers added another run in the fifth inning to make the score 6-2 as Mark Okano walked, Dillon O'Krane doubled, and Lentini plated a run with a fielder's choice.

In the bottom of the seventh inning Calgary's Rick Guarno, O'Krane, and Lentini hit three consecutive doubles with two outs to score two runs and get within two tallies at 6-4.

Victoria got a run back for a 7-4 lead in the next half inning as Brett Flowers walked and Bret Levier smacked a RBI double.

Game two of this series will be on Wednesday June 24th at 7:05 PM MDT as Evan Greusel (3-1) toes the rubber against Eduardo Baeza (1-4). Greusel has three wins and a no-decision in his last four starts after losing his first start while Baeza has made six starts on the season and has a 5.65 earned run average.
