Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Capitals first game back at TELUS Field in eleven days began on a beautiful summer evening in front of a great Tuesday night crowd. Riding out ten runs scored in the first four innings, including a seven-run second, the Caps (16-13) managed to hold off Long Beach (10-13), 11-8.
Mitch Graham, in his return to Edmonton and the Capitals since being one of the last players released in this year's Training Camp, led the team at the plate going three for five, including two doubles, with four runs batted in and a run scored out of the ninth place in the lineup. Following Capitals Training Camp, Graham joined Medicine Hat of the Western Major Baseball League and batted .333 in nine games with the Mavericks.
"Being cut was disappointing at first, but when you stop and think about it, it's a situation where you've got a lot of experienced players on the team. If I were the coach, I would have made the same decision," Graham commented about being released out of Training Camp. "I could have packed up and went back to Australia, but I thought if I just kept on playing I'd get another shot."
Long Beach made a game of it late with five runs in the final three innings, but David Moraga and Derrick DePriest managed to finish the game for Chris Little (3-1), who picked up the win. Little threw seven innings and held off Long Beach for the most part by scattering twelve hits and striking out two Armada batters. Keith Ramsey (1-3) took the loss, pitching into just the third inning after being touched up for nine runs, although only five were earned, off of ten Caps hits. Long Beach committed six errors in the game.
The same two teams will be back in action again tonight on Wiener Wednesday. Trevor Caughey (0-1) will take the mound for the Capitals and is scheduled to face former Major League pitcher, Jose Lima (1-3). Dancing Daniel, who was scheduled to make an appearance at Tuesday's game unfortunately became unavailable, but will make his Capitals debut later this week.
