Two Sharks Receive Weekly AFL Awards

May 25, 2016 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Jacksonville Sharks News Release

JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks and the Arena Football League announced that a pair of Sharks have earned individual honors for Week 8 of the 2016 AFL season. Quarterback Tommy Grady has been named Under Armour Offensive Player of the Week, while defensive back Greg Reid has been named Riddell Defensive Player of the Week.

Grady and Reid received these honors following outstanding performances in Jacksonville's 65-34 victory over the Portland Steel on Saturday, May 21.

The 31-year-old Grady put together one of the most efficient performances of his storied AFL career, completing 22 of his 27 pass attempts for 288 yards and eight touchdowns. Grady did not turn the ball over, and in fact led the Sharks to a touchdown on each of the 10 drives for which he was in the game. Grady was able to effectively distribute the ball among his receivers, as Joe Hills, Tiger Jones and London Crawford each caught at least two touchdowns.

In the midst of another outstanding season, Grady has completed 68.0 percent of his passes through seven games, tossing 40 touchdowns against just three interceptions. He currently leads the AFL in both passer rating (125.8) and passing yards per game (295.9)

On the other side of the ball, the 25-year-old Reid highlighted an outstanding overall performance by Jacksonville's secondary. While playing the demanding safety position, Reid excelled in coverage, recording five pass breakups and an interception. Reid nearly turned that pick into points, as he returned it all the way down to Portland's one-yard line before being pushed into the wall. Reid also tied for the team lead with 7.5 total tackles over the course of the game.

In his second season, the 2015 AFL Rookie of the Year is off to another outstanding start. Reid currently leads all AFL players with 52.0 total tackles, ranks second with 17 passes defended and is tied for fourth with four interceptions. Reid has picked off 13 passes in 19 career regular-season games.

A total of three Sharks have now received weekly League awards in 2016. Previously, wide receiver Joe Hills was named Under Armour Offensive Player of the Week for Week 2.

This week, the Sharks head to Orlando for a Week 9 matchup against the Predators on Friday, May 27. Kickoff from Orlando's Amway Center is set for 7:30 p.m.
