Clevan Thomas Reaches Career Milestone
May 25, 2016 - Arena Football League (AFL)
Los Angeles KISS News Release
Los Angeles - The LA KISS are pleased to report that in last week's matchup against the Arizona Rattlers, defensive back Clevan Thomas became the second player in Arena Football League history to record 80 career interceptions.
"It is a great accomplishment," said Head Coach Omarr Smith. "I believe he is the best defensive player in AFL history."
Prior to joining the LA KISS this offseason, Thomas spent his first 10 years in the AFL with the San Jose SaberCats. During his decade in the Bay Area, the 2012 AFL Hall of Fame inductee won four ArenaBowl championships (XVI, XVII, XXI and XXVIII), was named to the "First Team All-Arena" four times (2002, 2003, 2007 and 2013), and earned the AFL Defensive Player of the Year Award three times (2002, 2003 and 2013). Additionally, he was the 2002 AFL "Rookie of the Year" and the 2013 AFL "Defensive Back of the Year".
"Catching the ball is easy," said Thomas. "To get interceptions in this league, you need a good defensive line to put pressure on the quarterback, as well as an exceptional game plan by the coaching staff to put you in the right position. I have been blessed with both throughout my career."
Thomas is currently second in the all-time AFL interception record book. The 11-year veteran is currently just 17 interceptions shy of Kenny McEntrye's all-time AFL record of 97 career interceptions. Thomas reached this milestone one year earlier than McEntry, who surpassed the 80th interception career mark during his 12th season in the league.
When asked about surpassing McEntrye's record, Thomas responded hopefully. "I like my chances," Thomas explained. "If I stay healthy, I believe I will have a good chance to break the record." Thomas, in addition to tallying two interceptions, has tallied 14.5 total tackles and three pass breakups this season.
