Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Plymouth, MA - Plymouth was able to get the tying run on first base with two outs in the ninth, but were unable to bring the runner in, as Vermont sealed the victory 5-3.

Plymouth starter David Bates (Franklin, TN/ Vanderbilt) didn't look sharp, as he walked six hitters and hit one before being pulled in the top of the second. His sixth walk of the day came to Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) with the bases loaded, drawing in the first run of the game. Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, FL/ Eckerd) would then single into left, scoring two more and extending the lead to three.

Plymouth would get back to within one in the bottom of the second courtesy of a two run homerun off the bat of Hernen Sardinas (Orono, ME/ UMaine). The Pilgrims would also tie the game in the fourth on an RBI single.

Vermont would take the lead in the fifth and wouldn't surrender it after that. With two outs and a runner on second, Nolan Tressler (Woodstock, GA/ Georgia Southern) would single to right, scoring Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia). They would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) would also deliver an RBI single with two outs, scoring Nate Grys (Sterling Heights, MI/ Western Michigan).

Vermont starter Mark Connor (St. Albans, VT/ Clarkson) would be taken out of the game with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He picked up the win, going 8 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on 10 hits while striking out six. Zach Lutner (Sicklerville, NJ/ Villanova) would come in and strike out the only batter he would see, picking up his first save of the year and securing the win for Vermont.

Vermont (19-22) are clinging to their playoff hopes, now sitting three games back of Keene (21-18), and 3.5 back of Sanford (21-17). They head to Upper Valley (22-17) Saturday for the sixth and final game of the Governor's Cup. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
