Gonzalez, a former standout at Rio Grande City High School joins the Dorados for his first season in the af2. Last season, the 5'11" 195-pound quarterback served as a student-assistant with Texas A&M-Kingsville University (TAMKU), but Gonzalez is most notably known as a student-athlete with TAMKU from 1999-2002. Gonzalez concluded his career as one of the all-time greats to play at Texas A&M-Kingsville, ending his career with 15 school single-game, season and career records. In his four seasons with the Javelinas, he passed for 5,448 yards, had 7,371 total yards, tossed 47 touchdowns and had 387 passes completed. The 23 year-old was selected as the Lone Star Conference South Division Back of the Year and was on the All-LSC South first unit. He led the LSC in passing efficiency with a 154.9 rating. Gonzalez was named the Javelina offensive player of the week in seven of the 10 regular-season games his senior year. In 2002, Gonzalez led the team in passing with 148.0 yards a game, he completed 91 of 159 passes for a .572 percentage, he threw for 13 touchdowns and had only six interceptions. He led the team in total offense with 200.5 yards a game. Gonzalez was a Harlon Hill Trophy finalist in 2002, making him one of the top nine players in NCAA Division II during that season. The Rio Grande City native was named to several NCAA Division II All-West Region teams and he was a participant in the 2003 Cactus Bowl, a Division II All-Star game. Gonzalez attempted a pro career last year, but an injury hampered his efforts.
Null, a 25 year-old native of Houston, Texas will also seek his first year of af2 experience with the Dorados. Like Gonzalez, Null brings local ties to the Dorados. The 6'3" 255-pound fullback / linebacker played high school football at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen, where he received Defensive Player of the Year honors on a 10-0 squad in 1996, his junior season. He spent two seasons in the North American Football League (NAFL), spending the 1999 and 2000 seasons with the Fort Worth Texans. Null played fullback, linebacker and tight end with the Texans in 2000 and led the NAFL in tackles.
Gonzalez and Null are the sixth and seventh players announced to the Dorados roster, joining Marcus Bradley (def. specialist), Will Burch (QB), Spencer Conley (off./def. lineman), Rico Gardner (wide receiver/linebacker), Preston Hartfield (wide receiver / defensive back) and Raymond James (off/def. lineman).
