Central Valley Coyotes News Release
(Fresno, CA) â The Central Valley Coyotes announced today they have been assigned rookie kicker Navid Niakan and rookie offensive specialist Marvin Brown for the 2004 season. Brown will look to add speed to the Coyotes offensive attack and Niakan will hope to add consistency to the kicking game.
Niakan, 6-1, 203 lbs., has had numerous tryouts prior to joining the Coyotes organization, Philadelphia Soul (AFL 2003), San Jose Sabercats (AFL 2003) and the San Francisco 49ers (NFL 2003). He began his collegiate career at the University of Oregon before transferring over to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo after the 2000 season. While at Cal Poly, Niakan connected on 60 of 65 PAT's and 25 of 47 field goals, including a long of 47 yards.
Niakan finished his collegiate career third on the Mustangs all-time kick scoring list (135), second in career field goals made (25) and for a season (13), sixth in single-season PAT kicks made (35) and seventh in career PAT kicks made (60).
"He [Niakan] has a incredible leg and is very consistent," said head coach Cree Morris. "In the arena game you need a kicker who is very consistent and can hit those 40 and 50 yard attempts."
Brown, 5-11, 180 lbs., joins the franchise after completing his collegiate career at the University of Arkansas-Monticello where he was one of the top receivers for the Boll Weevils. Prior to transferring to Arkansas-Monticello, Brown spent a year at the University of Arizona and two years at Chabot Junior College (97-98).
"Marvin gives us that speed at OS we are looking for, he runs excellent routes and has great hands to go along with that," said Morris. "We are slowly starting to put this squad together."
The Coyotes will hold their second open tryout on February 21st for any athletes who were unable to attend the previous workout. Details on the tryout will be posted on Centralvalleycoyotes.com as soon as they become available.
The Coyotes will kickoff their 2004 season at the Selland Arena March 27, hosting the defending West Division Champion Hawaiian Islanders at 7:30 p.m. For information on season tickets please visit Centralvalleycoyotes.com or contact the Coyotes office at (559) 498-1182.
