June 12, 2018 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Through seven innings, Vermont looked like they were well on their way to their third win of the season. They had a 5-1 lead, but two errors late in the game proved costly, as they dropped the game to Valley, 6-5.
Valley got off to a quick start, scoring one off starter Jackson Shaver (Muskegon, MI/ Eastern Michigan). Vermont answered back with three runs in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. With two outs, Jar Parker (Dallas TX/ Arkansas Pine Bluff) doubled into center field. Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State) then singled, scoring Parker. After moving to third, Kelley then scored on a passed ball. Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) then singled to center, bringing in Chase Achuff (St. Petersburg, FL/ Eckerd).
They tacked on another run in both the fourth and the sixth, and were on cruise control until the top of the eighth. Ross Mintzer (Wyndmoor, PA/ Lock Haven) came in relief of Shaver and walked the first two batters he faced. He was then relieved by Will Hesslink (Shelburne, VT/ Boston College), who got his batter to fly out to center. He then issued a walk and a single, allowing one run to score. Freddie Landers (Savannah, GA/ Savannah St.) hit a chopper back to the mound that Hesslink threw away, allowing another run to score. Brian Herrmann (Northport, NY/ Stony Brook) came in for Hesslink, and allowed a double down the left field line, scoring two runs. The go ahead run was thrown out at home plate on a great relay from Austin White (Portland, CT/ Rhode Island) and Parker.
Neither team could push a run across in the ninth, so the game would be settled in extras. In the 10th, with two on and one out, Landers put a ball in play to shortstop which took a tough hop past Parker, allowing the go ahead runner to score. The Mountaineers went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 10th, and the Blue Sox walked away with the 6-5 victory.
The loss went to Ricky Constant (Newport, NH/ UMass Lowell), who gave up an unearned run in the 10th. The win for the Blue Sox wen to Ricky Reynoso (San Diego, CA/ Pacific), who pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth. The save went to Matt Kent (Huntertown, IN/ Xavier).
The Mountaineers fall to 2-4 on the season, 2.5 games back of the first place Upper Valley. Thursday, they travel to Danbury (4-2) to take on the Westerners. The game is set to start at 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
