Two Heat Players Named All-MISL
May 7, 2002 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Harrisburg Heat News Release
Harrisburg, PA â Harrisburg Heat forward David Bascome and defender Nick Corneli have been named to the 2001-02 All-MISL Second Team, the league announced on Tuesday.
Bascome makes an all-league team for the second time in his illustrious career. The Heat's all-time leading goal-scorer (334) and point-producer (822), Bascome scored a team-high 88 points on 36 goals and 9 assists in 36 games this season. The 32-year old Bermudan also blocked 35 shots, and was voted to his fourth All-Star Game in February. The 2000-01 Most Valuable Player runner-up needs only two games to become the Heat's all-time leader in appearances, and with 21 more blocks will become Harrisburg's all-time leader in that category as well.
Corneli, acquired by the Heat over the offseason from the inactive Toronto ThunderHawks, came into his own with a banner season that resulted in his first All-Star appearance. The 26-year old set career highs in goals (24), assists (15), points (67), and blocks (62), becoming only the third player in Heat history to score 60 points and block 60 shots in a season: the others are Bascome (128 points, 61 blocks in 2000-01) and current coach Richard Chinapoo (60 points, 65 blocks in 1994-95). The native of Montreal also led the team with four game-winning goals.
This marks only the third time that multiple Heat players have garnered all-league honors. Harrisburg landed two players on all-NPSL teams in 1991-92 (Franklin McIntosh, Joe Mallia) and 1995-96 (Danny Kelly, Scoop Stanisic), and four Heaters (Bascome, Gino DiFlorio, Bernie Lilavois, and Doug Petras) made all-league teams last season after a 24-16 finish.
