Massachusetts Pirates News Release

WORCESTER, MA - Two members of the 2021 Massachusetts Pirates, champions of the Indoor Football League, have earned All-League honors from the United States Football League.

Center Jared Thomas of the New Orleans Breakers was named to the All-USFL Team Offense and defensive tackle Toby Johnson of the New Jersey Generals was an All-USFL Team Defense selection.

Thomas, 6'4", 310 lbs., started all ten games for the Breakers who went 6 and 4 this season. The former Pirate, who hails from Indianapolis, IN also had one reception for 22 yards. The Breakers are the second seeded team in the South Division and will face top seeded Brimingham in the upcoming playoffs this Saturday at the Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, OH. Thomas, who played collegiately at Northwestern, helped the Breakers become the third best passing offense in the league with 188.1 yards per game. He also blocked for Jordan Ellis, the leading rusher in the USFL with 596 yards.

Johnson recorded 35 tackles, two sacks and had an interception for the Generals who also qualified for the upcoming playoffs as the top seed in the North Division. New Jersey finished 9-1 and will face the Philadelphia Stars. Johnson, 6'4", 320 lbs., was a key figure for the Generals who were number one against the run allowing 73.6 yards per game. New Jersey was second against the pass (273.3 yards per game) and third in points allowed, yielding 17.2 per game.

This marks the third consecutive season and Johnson is an All-League First Team performer (notwithstanding 2020 which was lost to the pandemic). In 2019 the Morrehead, MS native who played at the University of Georgia, received that honor with the Pirates in the National Arena League. He did the same with the IFL champion Pirates in 2021 before moving up to the USFL this year.

For Thomas, it's the second consecutive year with post-season honors. Last year he was an All-Rookie selection for the IFL champs and also received All-IFL Second Team Offense honors.
