FORT MYERS, FL (October 22, 2008) - The Minnesota Twins announced today 2009 coaching staff assignments for the Fort Myers Miracle. The Twins named Steve Mintz as pitching coach to replace Eric Rasmussen who has been elevated to Twins Minor League Pitching Coordinator. Mintz will join the rest of the returning staff of Jeff Smith (manager), Jim Dwyer (hitting coach) and Larry Bennese (trainer).

Rasmussen, a resident of Cape Coral, Florida, spent the last 10 years as the Miracle's pitching coach. The former major leaguer has been vital to the development of the Twins' prospects. The entire 2008 starting rotation for the Twins, all pitched for Rasmussen in Fort Myers. The 2008 Miracle pitching staff compiled the top ERA (3.51) in the Florida State League and the most strikeouts (1,001). Pitcher Anthony Slama was named to the post-season Florida State League team.

"Raz moving up in the system is a big honor for him. He has great character, knowledge and ability to work with pitchers that he will do a great job," said Miracle Manager Jeff Smith.

Rasmussen will take over for Rick Knapp who was named Detroit Tigers pitching coach last week.

"I appreciate this opportunity from the Twins and look forward to continuing to develop our arms in the system. I've enjoyed my time with the Miracle and I won't be a stranger around the park," said Rasmussen.

Steve Mintz will be the only new face in the Hammond Stadium dugout. Mintz recently completed his first year in New Britain (AA). The 39-year old Mintz worked with Smith in Beloit (A) during the 2006 and 2007 seasons.

"Steve has been in the Twins system for awhile (Mintz was pitching coach with GCL Twins (2002-05) and brings lots of experience to the table. He has knowledge of our pitchers and what it takes to continue their development to the big leagues," said Smith.

Smith, fresh off a West Division Championship in his first year in Fort Myers, is excited to return to Hammond Stadium.

"We had a fun season last year. We were able to develop guys and move them up and we kept winning which made the season even more enjoyable," said Smith.

The Naples, Florida native has compiled a 230-184 record in his three years as a manger in the Twins' system. Smith has piloted Beloit (06-07) and Fort Myers (2008) to the playoffs in all three years at the helm. He was named to the post-season Florida State League team as a coach in 2008.

Dwyer will return for his fourth season directing the Miracle hitters, while 2009 will mark the 11th year for Bennese in Fort Myers.

"There are some exciting young players in Beloit that we may see this upcoming year. I am sure it will be another exciting year in Fort Myers and can't wait to get going," said Smith.

The Miracle opens the 2009 Florida State League season on April 9.
