Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release

Friday, February 25 v. Macon: John Gurskis had a goal and two assists to lead the Macon Trax to a 5-2 win over the Winston-Salem Polar Twins Friday night at Joel Coliseum Annex in Southern Professional Hockey League action.

Edan Welch got the Trax on the board at the 8:26 mark of the first period. The Polar Twins batted around a loose puck in their own zone but could not gain control, allowing Welch to wrist home a shot past Jomar Cruz for the 1-0 Macon lead.

The score would stay that way until 8:58 of the second when Steve Zoryk made it 2-0 Macon. Winston-Salem left the Trax's leading scorer alone on the left post where John Gurskis connected with Zoryk for the one-timer and Zoryk's 26th goal of the season.

David Deeves gave Macon the three goal lead at 10:02 of the second with his 22nd goal of the season. Alone in the high slot, Deeves drilled a shot through a screen to beat Cruz for a 3-0 game.

Craig Miller would add one more for the Trax before the end of the period to give Macon a solid 4-0 lead heading into the third period.

Trevor Jobe pulled the Twins within three with his fifth goal of the season at 6:07 of the third but Macon got the goal back just 19 seconds later, Guskis' 20th goal of the season, for a 5-1 game.

Shaun Aebig would add one more for the Polar Twins but the score would stand at 5-2 for the sixth straight loss by the Twins.

Saturday, February 26 v. Fayetteville: Steve Lajoie tied the game on the power play with only 2:38 remaining in regulation and Shaun Peet scored the game-winning goal in overtime give the Winston-Salem Polar Twins a 4-3 victory over the Fayetteville FireAntz Saturday night at LJVM Annex. With the win, the Polar Twins snapped a season-high six-game losing streak and extended Fayetteville's to five games.

After a scoreless first period, Fayetteville stormed into the second period, scoring two goals within the first minute to grab a 2-0 lead. First it was Steve Roberts with his 34th goal of the season only 32 seconds into the middle frame. Nick Kormanyos added his ninth goal of the season only 18 seconds later for the two-goal FireAntz lead.

Winston-Salem drew within one at 7:29 of the period as Chris Affinati found himself alone in front to tally his first goal as a Polar Twin and second overall on the season.

Fayetteville regained the two-goal cushion at the 8:02 mark with Chad Peck's 11th goal of the season. With a Polar Twins defender pinching in the on the blue line, forward Trevor Karasiewicz found himself on the defending end of a two-on-one break the other way. Karasiewicz went down to block the cross-ice pass but could not keep Roberts from connecting with Peck for the 3-1 Fayetteville lead.

Rhett Dudley once again drew the Twins within one with his seventh goal of the season at the 9:35 mark of the second period. Steve Lajoie found Dudley alone at the left wing post where he found the back of the net to make it a 3-2 game.

The Polar Twins fought hard but could not get the puck past Fayetteville netminder Chad Collins. With just over four minutes remaining in the game, the Polar Twins found themselves on the power play. Winston-Salem scored but the goal was waived off as referee Bill Kicinski had lost sight of the puck and blown down the play before the puck crossed the goal line. With a second chance to tie the game, Trevor Karasiewicz teed up a shot that was deflected by Lajoie past Collins and into the net to knot the game 3-3.

In overtime, the Polar Twins kept the pressure on Collins. It was in the extra frame that Karasiewicz dropped a pass to Peet, who quickly wristed a shot from the right wing face off circle to send the Polar Twins to their second overtime victory over the Antz this season.
