Week In Review: The Oilers started the week with a narrow 4-3 shootout loss in Allen on Wednesday night. Tulsa fired 45 shots on goal and outshot the Americans 19-2 in the third period. Allen goalie Bryan Pitton stopped all five of the Oilers shootout attempts and Tulsa was forced to settle for a single point. In the first meeting of the season against the Mavericks on Friday, the Oilers fell behind 3-0 after the first period. Tulsa fought back to tie the game early in the third period only to watch the Mavs answer minutes later and hang on for a 4-3 win. The Oilers lost their sixth consecutive one-goal game on Saturday in a 5-4 setback to the Americans. Tulsa led 4-3 in the third period but Allen forward Kale Kerbashian scored the game-tying and game-winning goals just two and half minutes apart to push Allen to its fourth straight victory over the Oilers. Sunday afternoon at the Allen Event Center, the Oilers recorded their first win of the season, a 3-1 triumph over the Americans. Brandon Coccimiglio, Adam Pleskach, and Michel Beausoleil chipped in goals for Tulsa and Shane Madolora turned aside 27 shots as the Oilers improved to 1-5-2.
Sigh of Relief: Sunday's 3-1 win in Allen marked the first time this season the Oilers held an opponent to fewer than three goals. The victory lifted the Oilers out of last place in the CHL standings. Tulsa jumped over Arizona into ninth place and trails Wichita, St. Charles, and Quad City by only a single point.
Sensational Second Line: In the last three games, the Tulsa trio of Kyle Bochek, Brandon Coccimiglio, and Adam Pleskach has combined for 14 points. Each member of the Oilers second line is riding a three-game point streak. Bochek registered his first goal of the season against Allen on Saturday and chipped in assists on Friday and Sunday. Coccimiglio, who made his Oilers debut on Friday against the Mavericks, has two goals and four assists in the last three games and ranks third on the team in total points. Pleskach, just signed by the Oilers prior to Friday's game, scored the game-tying goal in his first appearance and followed up with three assists on Saturday against Allen. The rookie right-winger notched the game-winning goal in Tulsa's 3-1 victory on Sunday.
Still Streaking: Ben Gordon assisted on Michel Beausoleil's empty net goal in Allen on Sunday and ran his team-high point streak to five games. Gordon, Tulsa's second leading scorer last season, has seven points (3 goals, 4 assists) in his last five outings and leads the Oilers with eight points and 38 shots on goal.
Schedule Strength: Tulsa's three opponents this season, the Allen Americans, Denver Cutthroats, and Missouri Maveric ks, have a combined record of 19-2 -2, a winning p ercentage of .870.
Brothers Enter Lineup: Defenseman Scott Macaulay and his older brother, forward Blair Macaulay played their first games as Oilers on Sunday afternoon in Allen. The Winnipeg natives started the season with the Bakersfield Condors (ECHL). Scott, 5-8, 170-pounds, spent the last four years at Northern Michigan University while Blair, 5-11, 180-pounds, played four seasons at the University of Manitoba and was named the CIS West Most Valuable Player in both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons
Roster Moves: Right wing Ryan Menei has been moved from the 14-day to the 30-day IR. Defenseman Jarred Mohr and forward Alexandre Beauregard have been placed on the 14-day IR.
Shots Fired: Last season, the Oilers ranked ninth in the CHL in shots per game (27.7) and last in the league in shots against per game (35.3). So far this season, Tulsa is pulling the trigger with more frequency and ranks fourth in shots per game (34.5) while also ranking fourth in the CHL in shots against (31.5).
PK Disparity: The Oilers have allowed ten power play goals this season, more than any other team in the CHL. Eight of those ten goals have been given up on home ice. Through four games at the BOK Center, the Tulsa penalty kill is operating at just 63-percent. In four road games, the PK unit is clicking at a 90-percent success rate.
Deserving Honor for Dougie: In a ceremony prior to the start of Saturday's game against Allen, Oilers legend Doug Lawrence, among four other honorees, was recognized for his induction into the CHL Hall of Fame Class of 2013. Lawrence played 428 games in a Tulsa uniform and also spent brief period of time with the Memphis Riverkings (1992), the Oklahoma City Blazers (1995-96), and the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs (1999-00). Lawrence ranks number one all-time in the CHL with 684 career assists and tops the league charts with 2,109 penalty minutes. His 875 career points put him in fourth place on the CHL's all-time points list and he still holds the CHL single season assist record with 100 helpers during the 1996-97 campaign.
