Tucson Sidewinders News Release
Tucson breaks out of slump in emphatic fashion to take final game of series. RHP Shane Reynolds (1-0), making his 3rd rehab start with the Sidewinders, pitched well enough to earn the victory. He went 6 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 8 hits, while striking out 9. Tacoma starter RHP Gustavo Martinez (1-1) didn't last past the second inning as he surrendered 5 runs on 6 hits with 4 walks in the first 2 innings.
The Sidewinders scored at least 1 run in the 1st 7 innings of the game as they pounded out 16 hits. The biggest night came from 1B Steve Neal, who had 2 homers, his 8th and 9th of the year. SS Jerry Gil also provided some punch as he drilled his 6th bomb of the year to go along with his 5th triple. He is now tied with teammate Julio Ramirez, Iowa's Damien Jackson, and Colorado Springs' Jorge Piedra for 3rd in the league in 3-baggers. Leadoff man LF Victor Hall also had a nice night, going 2-5 with a triple (4) and an RBI.
For Tacoma, DH Bucky Jacobson was involved in another back-to-back home run feat. This time it happened with 3B Justin Leone in the 5th. Last night, Jacobson and 1B A.J. Zapp hit back-to-back homers in the 9th to pull out a victory. Tonight's bombs were Jacobsen's 15th shot of the season and Leone's team leading 17th.
The win for Tucson avoided their first series sweep by an opponent all season. An opponent has not swept the Sidewinders since 5/31/03-6/3/03 vs. Salt Lake. It bumped their record up to 35-28, still 3.5 games back of Sacramento. The loss dropped the Rainiers to 33-25, who still remain in first place.
The Sidewinders will now head out onto the road with an 8-game trip with stops in Edmonton and Salt Lake. They will be back in town on June 22nd to host Edmonton.
The night's attendance was 3,352 and the game lasted over 3 hours at 3:10. Probables for the first game of the Edmonton series feature Tucson's RHP Lance Cormier (1-1, 1.98) facing Edmonton's RHP Wilton Chavez (2-6, 4.39). Game time is 6:05 PM.
