Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Greg Aquino walked four straight Edmonton batters with two outs in the bottom of the tenth Monday forcing in two runs in a 3-2 Trappers victory at TELUS Field in the opener of the four-game series.

Tucson had claimed a 2-1 lead in the top of the tenth when they scored a run without a hit. Victor Hall's fielders choice plated Craig Ansman for the brief advantage.

Aquino allowed a one out single in the tenth to Anthony Medrano but got Ron Calloway to fly to center field for the second out. Four consecutive walks to Valentino Pascucci, Ryan Church, Brian Harris and Paul Hoover provided the winning margin.

Tucson broke up a scoreless game with an unearned run in the top of fourth inning. Noochie Varner reached on an error by third baseman Wes Carroll and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Craig Ansman.

Sidewinder starter Lance Cormier made the lead hold up until the bottom of the seventh inning. Brian Harris singled to begin the frame and scored with one out on a double by Carroll. The run tied the game at 1, and broke a 13.1 innings scoreless streak by Cormier. Shane Nance was summoned from the bullpen and retired Brandon Watson to end the inning and keep the game tied.

Cormier entered the game with a 1.98 ERA in two starts, allowed seven hits and one run in 6.2 innings while striking nine. Edmonton starter Wilton Chavez allowed just four hits and the unearned run in his seven innings of work.

Tucson fell to 25-29 and four and a half games back of Sacramento improved to 36-28. The Sidewinders and the Trappers will play game two of the four-game series Tuesday night at TELUS Field with a 6:05 p.m. start. Mike Gosling (2-3 6.64) will start for the Sidewinders against the Trappers Ron Chiavacci (1-5 5.95). The game will be broadcast live on Cool 1450 AM.
