Scott Downs, Joe Dillon Win PCL Player of the Week Honors
Published on June 14, 2004 under Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. â Edmonton Trappers starter Scott Downs became the first pitcher in the Pacific Coast League this season, and just the second in the 24-year history of the franchise, to throw a no-hitter, a rare feat that earned him PCL Pitcher of the Week honors for games beginning on June 7th and continuing through June 13th. Albuquerque Isotopes infielder Joe Dillon wins the Batter of the Week award for the same period after belting six homers and driving in 11 runs in six games.
Downs, a native of Lexington, Kentucky, took the mound in the second game of a doubleheader against Las Vegas on June 11th and held the 51s hitless in a 4-0 Trappers win, becoming the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter in Edmonton since Triple-A baseball arrived in the city nearly a quarter of a century ago. Throughout the seven-inning complete game, only two Las Vegas hitters managed to reach base against the left-hander. Outfielder Chin-Feng Chen drew a two-out walk in the first before Daylan Holt reached on an error by the pitcher in the fifth, as Downs joined Aaron Small, who threw a no-hitter on August 8, 1996 in Vancouver, as the only pitchers in Trappers history to throw a no-no. At one point in the game, the Montreal Expos prospect retired 11 hitters in a row before striking out the last batter to put an exclamation point on his first professional no-hitter.
Isotopes infielder Joe Dillon has continued a torrid month of June in which he's accounted for half of his team's total home run output by racking up nine in 12 games. On June 8th, Dillon, who resides in Rockin, California, rocked two homers and drove in a season-high six runs in a 13-8 Albuquerque loss to Omaha. Two days later, the Florida Marlins farmhand belted two more homers as the Isotopes downed Nashville 8-3. Finally, with a solo home run on June 12th, Dillon added his name to the âTopes record books by joining Robert Stratton as the only players in Isotopes history to homer in four straight contests. In addition to his six homers on the week, which helped elevate him into the PCL Leaders with 14 dingers on the year, Dillon scored eight runs, has a .500 batting average, and racked up a slugging percentage of 1.318.
