Tucson eliminate Salt Lake

The Tucson Padres eliminated Salt Lake from playoff contention Wednesday, by defeating the Bees 6-4 at Spring Mobile Ballpark. The Padres have won three straight games and are on a six-game road win streak dating back to August 19.

Tucson jumped ahead in the opening inning with three runs. Andy Parrino brought home the first run with a RBI single to right field and Anthony Contreras scored on a double play for the second. Sawyer Carroll lined a single to center field to bring home Parrino for a 3-0 Padres lead. The Bees responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first on an RBI single by Efren Navarro. Blake Tekotte led off the second inning with his eighth home run of the season over the right field wall. Salt Lake answered with two runs in the bottom of the second to make the score 4-3 Tucson.

Jesus Merchan increased the Padres lead to 5-3 in the third by scoring Vince Belnome on a sacrifice fly to left field. Tucson received another run in the fifth on Carroll's RBI double to center field. Carroll finished the night with three hits and two RBIs. Salt Lake's Matt Long singled to center field in the bottom of the sixth to score Doug Deeds and bring the Bees within two of Tucson.

Jason Ray picked up his second save for the Padres by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. Thad Weber won his first game with Tucson, going 5.1 innings, yielding eight hits and four runs. Matt Shoemaker took the loss for Salt Lake, surrendering 11 hits and four earned runs in seven innings of work.
