Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
Despite a nine-hit attack, the Triple-A Phillies lost their third straight decision on Monday, falling to the Yankees 6-3 at the Carpenter Complex in Clearwater.
Phillies right-hander Kyle Kendrick made the start for the Triple-A squad, and allowed five runs in six innings while striking out eight and walking one, but a trio of home runs got the big leaguer in trouble. Relieving Kendrick was Justin De Fratus, who allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh, Mauricio Robles who allowed one run on one hit and three walks in the eighth and Austin Hyatt, who struck out the side in the ninth.
Offensively, C Carlos Ruiz was 2-for-6 while INF Cody Overbeck went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. C Tommy Joseph and INF Michael Martinez each collected a double, with the latter driving in a run. On the day seven players tallied a hit, while OF Tyson Gillies went 0-for-2 with a walk and stole a pair of bases.
Hyatt, who has allowed one hit in five innings of work this spring in minor league camp, embarks on his fifth season in professional baseball, all in the Philadelphia organization. Last season, split between Double-A Reading and Lehigh Valley, the 2009 15th round draft pick combined to go 10-12 with a 5.27 ERA (2-7, 6.33 with LHV) over 27 appearances, all of which were starts. A product of the University of Alabama, the Georgia native was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 23rd round of the 2004 draft, but declined the offer.
The Triple-A Phils are back in action Tuesday at 1 p.m. when they travel to take on the Yankees in Tampa.
