Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
JUPITER, Fla. - The Dunedin Blue Jays (9-6, 48-37) hit three home runs and got seven shutout innings from starter Asher Wojciechowski in a 6-1 victory over the Palm Beach Cardinals (9-7, 38-47) Saturday evening at Roger Dean Stadium.
Eric Fornataro (6-7, 3.96 ERA) gave up three runs on four hits and a pair of walks in 6.0 innings, suffering a loss that broke a personal three-game winning streak. The right-hander, in his fourth professional season out of Miami-Dade Community College, struck out four but gave up two home runs which accounted for all three charged tallies.
Fornataro and Wojciechowski (5-7, 5.25 ERA), whose victory broke a personal four-game losing streak, battled through the first four innings with just one hit allowed on each side until Ryan Goins led off the fifth with a solo homer to right, his second of the season.
The Blue Jays struck again one inning later when Fornataro led off the sixth by plunking Sean Ochinko, who ended up scoring the winning run when Brad Glenn hit a towering two-run homer to left. Glenn, a 2011 Florida State League All-Star selection, is now tied for second in the league with 17 longballs.
Veteran left-hander Ron Mahay, who was signed by the Cardinals as a free agent this week and assigned to Palm Beach earlier in the day, relieved Fornataro to begin the seventh inning and allowed one run on a hit and two strikeouts. Mahay, a 40-year-old pitcher who has spent 14 years in the Major Leagues with eight different teams, made a throwing error on what would have been the final out to allow the Jays' fourth run of the night.
Brian Van Kirk added a two-run homer, following a double from Kevin Ahrens, off right-hander Chris Corrigan in the eighth to put the score at 6-0. The big night for Dunedin marks the fourth time this season that the Cardinals have allowed a trio of home runs.
Palm Beach managed to scratch across a run and avoid the shutout in the ninth thanks to a one-out Edgar Lara RBI-single, but right-hander Steve Turnbull recorded two quick outs to secure the 6-1 final score. Righty Jesse Simpson and left-hander Aaron Loup each added a scoreless inning for the Cardinals and Blue Jays, respectively.
Palm Beach and Dunedin will square off in a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 4:05 p.m. to make up for Friday's rainout, with left-hander Tyler Lyons (2-3, 5.54 ERA) and righty Arquimedes Nieto (1-1, 2.25 ERA) set to throw for the home team against Dustin McGowan (0-1, 10.12 ERA) and Ryan Tepera (6-4, 4.55 ERA) for the D-Jays. McGowan is making his third appearance on MLB Rehab Assignment from the Toronto Blue Jays.
