Bradenton Marauders News Release
BRADENTON, FL - The Bradenton Marauders, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, split their second doubleheader in the three days Saturday, 6-2, 5-4 to the Lakeland Flying Tigers at McKechnie Field.
Marauders starter Brett Lorin came within eight outs of a perfect game in the opener, firing his first career complete game and allowing only two hits in seven innings. Lorin was flawless until the fifth when Wade Gaynor lined a 1-0 pitch over the leftfield fence for his seventh homerun of the season. Daniel Fields homered to right to lead off the sixth. Those were the only baserunners the righty allowed.
The M's offense backed up Lorin early, scoring six runs in the first two innings and chasing Lakeland's Jared Wesson from the game. Bradenton put the first four runners on in the first, using singles from Robbie Grossman and Elevys Gonzalez, a hit batter in Jarek Cunningham, and a double from Aaron Baker to help drive home three. Adalberto Santos also picked up an RBI groundout.
Baker struck again in the second inning, batting with two on and two out, the lefty launched his 11th homerun of the season out to right to make it 6-0. He also took over the Florida State League lead with his four RBI performance, raising his total to 64, one better than Daytona's Justin Bour at the time.
The second game wasn't as kind to Bradenton. Lakeland jumped out in front early, scoring in the first on an RBI single from Jordan Lennerton. Corey Jones hit his second homerun to grow the lead to 3-0.
In need of offense against top prospect lefty Drew Smyly, the Marauders finally got through against him in the fourth. Gonzalez led off with a double down the right field line, later scoring on a Santos single. The Marauders wouldn't score again until the seventh when, with two on and two out, Gonzalez hit his third homerun of the season to pull within a run. Facing the Lakeland closer Kenny Faulk, Aaron Baker popped up one batter later to end the night, 5-4.
The Marauders are now 2-2 in doubleheader games this season, winning both games in which they wear their gold alternate caps. They are 12-2 when wearing the gold hats since the all-star break, 1-5 wearing anything else.
Bradenton continues its series with Lakeland Sunday at 5pm. Radio coverage begins at 4:45 on 1280-AM WTMY. The game is dubbed 'Public Safety Night,' with fans having the ability to tour a SWAT team vehicle, Coast Guard boat, fire rescue truck and more. There will also be free giveaways, including bike helmets, while supplies last. For more information visit BradentonMarauders.com.
