September 11, 2009 - International League (IL1)
Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians ended their season on September 5, with their largest crowd of the year, a standing-room-only sell out of 15,461. The Tribe hosted 549,552 fans (8,202 per game) at Victory Field in 2009 -- its third best average total since 2001.
The Indians also averaged more than 10,000 fans per game during a 19-game stretch from July 20 - August 23 and also had seven contests in front of at least 13,000 and four games in front of at least 14,000.
"Our value-oriented message of providing Indians' Baseball at Victory Field as affordable and memorable family fun resonated well with our fans in 2009," Tribe Vice President & General Manager Cal Burleson says. "We experienced tremendous walk-up crowds when we had good weather this year. The most common characteristic of our fans is - that when they are at Victory Field - they are smiling."
A couple Victory Field records were set as well during the 2009 season. On Monday, July 20 Indianapolis defeated Durham in front of a Victory Field record 13,862 fans for a non-July 4th Monday contest, while in the homestand from July 20-27 the Indians averaged their best ever attendance for an eight-game homestand, 10,886 fans per game.
Despite five total postponements, including July 4th, the Tribe still managed to finish the year fifth in average attendance among the 14 International League teams. The five openings came after just one postponement over the past two years were the most since they lost five in 1997.
On August 21, Victory Field welcomed its eight millionth fan since the gates originally opened in July of 1996. Only one other team in all of the International League has drawn more than that over the same period of time.
Indianapolis will entertain Toledo on April 16 in the 2010 home opener at Victory Field. The first homestand includes four games against the Mud Hens (April 16-19), two contests vs. the Columbus Clippers (April 20-21) and three games against the Louisville Bats (April 22-24).
