Tri-City Storm Defenseman Mattias Goransson Wins Defenseman of the Week
February 1, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Tri-City Storm News Release
Kearney, Ne. - For the third time this season, Tri-City Storm blueliner Mattias Goransson has been named CCM Defenseman of the week, the USHL announced Monday.
The native of Grums, Sweden tallied four assists this weekend, including a season-best three-point effort Friday against Fargo. With the helpers, Goransson reclaims his spot as the top defenseman scorer in the USHL and sits at second on Tri-City with 29 points. The 6-foot-3, 205-lb. assistant captain is tied for the most assists by a USHL defenseman, at 22 helpers.
Excelling: Goransson's notables
- 1st: Points by a USHL defenseman (29) | Team assists (22) | Team plus/minus (+13)
- T-1st: Assists by a USHL defenseman (22) | Power-play points by a USHL defenseman (14)
- 2nd: Shots by a USHL defenseman (98) | Points on the Storm (29).
- 4th: Power-play assists by a USHL defenseman (10)
"Mattias gives us a chance to win every night," said Bill Muckalt, Head Coach and General Manager of the Tri-City Storm. "He has evolved into a leader on and off the ice and we really appreciate what he brings in all three zones."
Goransson's development into a three-zone threat has, perhaps, been most apparent in the offensive end, where he has already exceeded his points total from last year (28 points in 2014-15). One more goal would surpass the seven he racked up in 57 contests last season.
In addition, the UMass-Lowell commit has been helped by the presence of his defensive partner, John Marino. The tandem has been together the entire season. Marino has two goals and 15 assists, including a two-point night Friday at Fargo.
Called the Storm's "Rock of Gibraltar" by Head Coach Bill Muckalt, Goransson has been on ice for 62 of the Storm's 109 goals this season, or 56.8 percent, the most of any Tri-City player.
This is the fourth time in Goransson's two-year career he has been named USHL Defenseman of the Week. Additionally, this is the sixth time Storm players have been named players of the week at their respective position this season.
The Storm travels to the eastern outpost of the USHL, Youngstown, for a pair of games against the Phantoms next Friday and Saturday at 6:05 p.m. The Viaero Wireless Pregame Show starts at 5:45 p.m for both games. Tri-City is next at home on Feb. 19 against Sioux Falls for Thunderstruck Night, with a Free Kids Friday and a special thunderstick giveaway. Listen to the Storm's games on the Breeze 94.5 FM with David Fine.
