Macon Trax News Release
[Macon, Ga.]âThe Macon Trax winning ways were put to a stop by the Alabama Slammers in front of a crowd of 1,334. The Slammers, playing their fourth game in four nights, got all the offense they needed from Doug Lawrence.
Lawrence started the night's scoring with his first of three goals at 5:38 into the first game. The assists went to Prentice, who has 16 points versus the Trax this season, and Jeff Mead.
Steve Zoryk scored his 21st goal of the season early in the second period. He lit the lamp when David Deeves passed to Luke Murphy from behind the net. Murphy found Zoryk on the other side of the crease and slid the beautiful pass across. Zoryk continues to be the leading scorer in the WHA2.
Alabama reclaimed the lead when Jeff Mead put a shorthanded goal past Trax net minder Andy Kollar. The Trax would tie the game on the power play when John Gurskis found the net.
In the latter stages of the second period the Slammers took control of the match. Lawrence scored his second goal at the 12:15 mark and Jerry Kresac gave Alabama a two goal lead at the end of two periods.
Both teams looked tired much of the third period. In addition to the Slammers playing four games in four nights, the Trax were on their third game in as many nights.
Gurskis brought the crowd to life as he found the net for the second time in the game 11:09 in the final frame. For the first time all night the Trax had a jump in their step.
With about 90 seconds remaining Trax Coach Tommy Stewart called his timeout to draw up a play. He pulled his goalie and left the net open in favor of the extra attacker.
The Slammers were able to scrape and win the draw in their own end. Lawrence took the puck and fired it the length of the ice into an open net. As Lawrence finished off his hat trick, the Trax saw their season high four game winning streak end.
After a week of practice the Trax will start a road trip in Lakeland Friday night. The puck drops at 7:05 and can be heard around the world on www.irn.fm. Monday night is Chuggin' With The Trax at Applebee's Grill & Bar on Riverside Drive. Stop by from 6-7pm as Adam Minnick will sit down with Tommy Stewart and Ryan Rivard.
