
Travs Take Opener in Little Rock against Cards

North Little Rock, AR - With a big first inning, the Arkansas Travelers took the opening game of the series against the Springfield Cardinals, 6-0, before 3,795 fans at Dickey-Stephens Park on Thursday night.
The Travelers (3-0, 39-33) jumped in front with all six of their runs in the bottom of the first against RHP Corey Baker (L, 2-3) and the Cardinals (0-3, 30-43). 2B Sherman Johnson sparked the rally with a leadoff double. After Johnson moved to third on a single from LF Drew Maggi, CF Jared Mitchell worked a walk to load the bases with no outs. 3B Brian Hernandez then drove a two-run single up the middle, cracking the scoreless tie. Baker dug in with a groundout for the frame's first out, but RF Blake Gailen worked a walk to reload the bases. 1B Wade Hinkle then delivered a grand slam to right field, opening the 6-0 lead for Arkansas.
After the first inning, the Cardinals (0-3, 30-43) received seven scoreless innings from their bullpen, keeping the Travs at the six runs on the board. RHP Kurt Heyer took over to start the second and dealt four scoreless innings, scattering four hits while striking out five. RHP Jordan Swagerty, RHP Kevin Herget and RHP Kyle Barraclough then each logged one scoreless inning apiece.
However, the Travelers also received excellent work on the mound, with their All-Star starter, LHP Nate Smith (W, 7-4), carrying them through seven scoreless innings. Smith struck out five and allowed only three hits and two walks.
Arkansas RHP Chris O'Grady and RHP Alan Busenitz both provided a scoreless relief inning, closing the 6-0 win for the Travelers.
