SPRINGDALE, AR- The Arkansas Travelers shut out the Northwest Arkansas Naturals for the second straight game, collecting a 2-0 win on Sunday night at Arvest Ballpark. The Naturals last scored a run in the sixth inning of Friday's game and have been shutout for 21 consecutive innings.
Michael Mariot turned in his second straight quality start for the Naturals. The right-hander went six shutout innings allowing eight hits and striking out five. His counter part Mike Piazza matched him going six shutout innings allowing just three hits.
The Travelers got on the board first in the top half of the ninth inning. Casey Haerther led off with a single and was replaced by pinch-runner Jimmy Swift. Swift moved to third on a single by first baseman Brian Hernandez, and later scored on a wild pitch. Darwin Perez followed with an RBI single to give the Travelers a 2-0 advantage.
Ethan Hollingsworth (0-3) suffered the loss working three innings allowing three hits and two runs. The right-hander retired the first six men he faced before giving up two runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Ryan Chaffee (2-1) picked up the victroy, working two innings, while allowing just one hit. Kevin Johnson worked a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.
Alex McClure was a bright spot for the Naturals offense recording his first multi-hit game in Double-A. The multi-hit effort comes in just his fifth game with the Naturals. The shorstop is hitting .308 through those five contests.
The Naturals wrap up their four-game series with the Arkansas Travelers tomorrow afternoon at 12:05 PM. Right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon (0-0, 0.00) will make his Double-A debut for the Naturals against the Travelers right-hander Matt Oye (2-4, 4.50). The game can be heard on ESPN 92.1 The Ticket.
