Springfield Cardinals News Release
Tulsa, OK - Springfield evened the series with Tulsa with a 5-4 victory on Saturday night and looked to win back to back games for the first time on the road trip on Sunday night at ONEOK Field.
The Cardinals sent righty Richard Castillo to the mound against fellow right hander Dan Houston.
After two and a half scoreless innings, the Tulsa Drillers took advantage of some wildness from Castillo. With one out, Josh Rutledge was hit by a pitch and moved to third after Corey Dickerson singled. Nolan Arenado followed with a walk to load the bases and Kiel Roling singled through the left side to bring home two runs to give Tulsa a 2-0 lead.
Dan Houston was in control for the first five innings for Tulsa allowing just three base runners, but Springfield exploded for five runs in the 6th. Oscar Taveras launched a three-run homer, his 15th of the year, and Audry Perez and Adam Melker cashed in RBI singles to give the Cardinals a 5-2 lead.
Castillo retired 10 of 11 batters heading into the 7th before Lars Davis doubled, Warren Schaeffer walked and Mike Mitchell singled in Davis to make it 5-3. Deryk Hooker came in out of the bullpen and induced a double play to get out of the inning with Springfield still in front by two. Hooker added another flawless inning to get the Springfield to the 9th in front.
Keith Butler threw a scoreless 9th with two strikeouts to finish off the 5-3 win. It was Butler's 15th straight save.
Springfield will conclude their four-game set with the Tulsa Drillers tomorrow afternoon at 12:05pm in Tulsa. The Cardinals will send Carlos Martinez to the mound against Parker Frazier of the Drillers.
The Cardinals will not return home until Friday, June 29th after the All-Star break to host the Frisco RoughRiders in a three game series. Every Friday is a Fireworks Friday thanks to AM Pyrotechnics.
