Edmonton Trappers News Release

Catcher Paul Hoover drew a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the 10th inning, forcing home Valentino Pascucci with the winning run as the Edmonton Trappers downed the Tucson Sidewinders 3-2 Monday night at TELUS Field. The walk, which was issued by Tucson reliever Greg Aquino (1-3), was the fourth in a row for the Trappers, who are now 5-1 in extra-innings and 7-0 in one-run games at TELUS Field. Edmonton has won four games in a row, tying the season-high for the longest winning streak. Edmonton has been getting outstanding starting pitching of late and Monday was no exception as right-hander Wilton Chavez went 7.0 innings, allowing only one unearned run on four hits and one walk while striking out one. Edmonton's starters have allowed only four earned runs in the last four games, covering 29.0 innings. The win ended Tucson's five-game winning streak at TELUS Field, which dated back to last season. Edmonton had struggled on Monday's entering the game, posting a 2-8 record prior to tonight's contest. The Trappers and Sidewinders continue this four-game series on Tuesday night at TELUS Field.

The Trappers had a couple of opportunities to score early off Tucson starter Lance Cormier, who had a stellar outing of his own on Monday night. Center fielder Brandon Watson led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, but he was erased on a fielder's choice and a walk later in the inning to Ron Calloway went for not as Cormier struck out Valentino Pascucci to end the frame. Chavez held the Sidewinders off the board through the first three innings, but Tucson got to him in the fourth with the aid of an error. The miscue, a fielding error by third baseman Wes Carroll with one out in the frame, allowed right fielder Noochie Varner to reach first base. He advanced to second on a single by first baseman Steve Neal and went to third when Julio Ramirez drew a walk to load the bases. Catcher Craig Ansman delivered the game's first run with a sacrifice fly that scored Varner. Edmonton had another chance to score in the fifth inning as Hoover led off with a double down the right field line and moved to third when Carroll followed with a base hit to center field. Hoover tried to score on a ground ball, but was tossed out at home by second baseman Keoni DeRenne.

Edmonton finally managed to get to Cormier in the seventh inning when second baseman Brian Harris led off with a single and Carroll followed with a one-out double to the gap in right-center field that plated the tying run and atoned for his fourth inning error. Cormier exited in the seventh inning, allowing one run on seven hits and one walk, while fanning nine in 6.2 innings. The game remained deadlocked until a bizarre 10th inning when both relievers, Aquino and Edmonton's Roy Corcoran (1-1), struggled to find the strike zone. Ansman led off the Sidewinders half of the extra frame with a walk and advanced to second when the next batter, Brian Barden, also drew a free pass. They moved up on a sacrifice bunt and Corcoran intentionally walked pinch-hitter Micah Franklin and to load the bases for Victor Hall, who beat out a possible double play ball, allowing Ansman to score the go-ahead run. Anthony Medrano singled with one out in the bottom half of the inning. Aquino got two outs then walked Pascucci, Ryan Church, Harris and Hoover to plate the tying and winning runs. The teams combined for four walks in the first nine innings only to see Corcoran and Aquino walk seven batters in the bonus frame.
