Edmonton Trappers News Release

Right-hander Ben Howard (3-2) tossed 7.0 shutout innings as the Portland Beavers edged the Edmonton Trappers 1-0 Monday night at TELUS Field. It was only the third 1-0 game in the nine-year history of TELUS Field, but it was the second time in less than a week that the Trappers have lost when there has only been one run scored in the game. Edmonton also lost 1-0 at Cashman Field in Las Vegas last Tuesday. The last 1-0 game at TELUS Field was on June 6, 2001 when the Memphis Redbirds beat the Trappers behind the pitching of left-hander Bud Smith. The Trappers have never won a 1-0 game at TELUS Field and have not won a 1-0 game period since 1997 when they beat Tacoma on July 18 at Cheney Stadium. The Beavers entered the game having won only three times in 18 tries at TELUS Field, but they came away with the victory to extend their lead over the Trappers to seven games in the North Division. Edmonton's record in one-run games falls to 3-6 with the loss. The Trappers and Beavers conclude this four-game series on Tuesday night at TELUS Field. Edmonton will continue the homestand on Thursday night as the Tacoma Rainiers come to town for a four-game set.

Howard and Edmonton starter Tim Drew (0-3) dominated the game from the beginning. Drew yielded a walk to Jermaine Clark with one out in the first inning, but the next batter, Tagg Bozied, lined into a double play to end that threat. Drew had a no-hitter through 4.2 innings before finally allowing a base hit to Alex Fernandez. Fernandez was caught stealing to end the inning and Drew retired the side in order in the next inning. He retired 12 batters in a row at one point and faced the minimum through six frames. Howard got into trouble in the second inning when Edwards Guzman singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. Matt Cepicky then singled to right and Guzman attempted to score, but he was gunned down at home plate by right fielder Jason Bay. Edmonton had runners on first and third with no one out in the sixth, but Terrmel Sledge struck out and Valentino Pascucci grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Beavers finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the seventh inning with a single run off Drew. With one out Clark drew a walk and advanced to second when Bozied also drew a base on balls. Drew fanned Bay, a native Trail, B.C., for the second out in the frame. Alex Pelaez reached on an infield single to load the bases, but Trappers' third baseman Scott Hodges threw wildly to first in an attempt to get Pelaez and Clark came into score on the play. Edmonton failed to get a baserunner in the final three innings as Howard set down the side in order in the seventh and Cliff Bartosh retired all six batters that he faced in his two innings of work to record his fourth save of the season.
