Tourists Tally Biggest Win of the Year
May 20, 2018 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Asheville Tourists News Release
ROME - For the first time in 11 games, the Rome Braves had to go up against Asheville's Garrett Schilling. The Tourists offense gave Schilling and company plenty of run support and Asheville ended up with a convincing 14-1 victory.
Schilling lasted only four innings despite limiting the Braves to one run on four hits. The right-hander was given an early exit after a hit by pitch. Asheville's manager Robinson Cancel followed Schilling to the clubhouse after defending his pitcher.
Justin Valdespina followed with four perfect innings out of the bullpen and newcomer Braxton Lorenzini tossed a scoreless ninth in his Tourists debut. Offensively, Asheville was relentless.
The Tourists scored four runs in the second inning and added single runs in the third, fifth, and sixth. Leading 7-1, the Tourists doubled their scoring output with their biggest inning of the year; a seven-run eighth.
Brett Stephens led the way with a 4-for-6 performance including two runs scored, two RBI, and a triple. Taylor Snyder contributed three RBI and was joined in the multi-hit department by Ramon Marcelino and Chad Spanberger.
In addition to Asheville's 14 hits, the Tourists worked a season-high eight walks. The Braves had to use a position player to pitch the ninth.
Asheville will attempt to carry this momentum into an eight-game homestand that begins on Monday night against the Greenville Drive.
