TORTUGAS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER

Daytona outscores Tampa, 20-3, in two games

TAMPA, FL - The Tortugas swept their first doubleheader of the year, outscoring the Tampa Yankees, 20-3, over the two games Saturday at Steinbrenner Field. The Tortugas tied their season-high with 20 hits in the second win.

Game One

Chris Okey drove in a career-high six runs in Daytona's, 7-1, victory over Tampa in game one.

Gavin LaValley began the scoring with a leadoff home run to left field in the second inning off RHP Albert Abreu. From there, Okey took over. He doubled Daytona's lead later in the inning with a groundout to short.

Leading, 2-0, after two innings, Okey added another RBI groundout in the fourth inning to take a 3-0 lead.

For good measure, Okey later smacked his first career grand slam into the right field bleachers, to go up 7-0.

RHP Jose Lopez (2-3) fell two outs shy of his first career complete game, allowing a run in 6 1/3 innings. The lone blemish was a Chris Gittens homer in the seventh. RHP Jake Ehret, in his first appearance back with Daytona, retired both batters faced.

Abreu (0-2) took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings in his first start off the disabled list.

Game Two

The Tortugas matched a season-high with 20 hits in their, 13-2, win in game two to take the series.

It was a more team effort for Daytona in the second go-round. However, much like game one, the Tortugas got on the board in the same fashion. This time it was Reydel Medina who hit the leadoff home run in the second inning, his second of the year.

After Tampa tied it in the bottom half of the frame, on a Gosuke Katoh RBI single to center, the Tortugas responded in a big way. Daytona batted around in the top of the third, sending 10 men to the plate while scoring five times on seven hits.

Alfredo Rodriguez started the rally with a double, scoring on Shed Long's double to centerfield that followed. Two batters later, LaValley drove home his second run of the day with an infield single to third base. Medina drove home his second run in as many innings with a sacrifice fly to center to give Daytona a 4-1 lead.

The inning wrapped up on back-to-back RBI singles from Mitch Piatnik and Rodriguez, the 10th hitter of the inning.

Rodriguez was back at it in the fifth inning, adding another two-run single to give Daytona an 8-1 lead.

The Tortugas would bat around again in the sixth inning, scoring six more runs on six hits. The first four Tortugas all readh base, with LaValley beginning the scoring with an RBI double to right. Later in the frame, Chadwick Tromp had delivered an RBI single to center. Rodriguez and Long capped the scoring with RBI singles later in the frame.

Daytona will look for the series sweep Sunday in Tampa. RHP Vladimir Gutierrez (3-3, 3.93) will get the ball for Daytona against LHP Josh Rogers (3-3, 2.49). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM with the Metcare Pregame Show beginning at 12:50 PM on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
