Daytona Tortugas News Release
Bradenton, FL - The Daytona Tortugas (15-12, 51-45) scored 17 runs but split the doubleheader with the Bradenton Marauders (38-30, 52-46) Sunday at McKechnie Field. Juan Duran went a combined 5-for-7, with two doubles, a home run, and four RBIs. The first game was a resumption of Friday's suspended game, beginning in the bottom of the first.
Game One:
In the first game, the Tortugas handed over two different leads. In the second inning, Daytona took a 2-0 lead when Duran doubled to center field to score a pair. However, Bradenton struck right back with two runs in the bottom of the third, when the Marauders strung together three hits, including a two-run double from Cole Tucker, to tie the game up.
In the sixth, Daytona's offense erupted for five runs. Gavin LaValley drove home the go-ahead run when he singled to center field to score Blake Trahan, who walked and stole second base, to set the inning. Aristides Aquino followed with his 14th home run of the season to give Daytona a 5-3 lead. Garrett Boulware drove in Duran with a double to double the lead, 6-3, before Blake Butler plated Boulware on a RBI single.
The Marauders stormed back in their half of the inning and scored four runs to tie the game. The inning was highlighted by a game-tying three-run blast from Michael Suchy off LHP Brennan Bernardino to knot the game, 7-7. Bradenton was able to score the go-ahead runs in the seventh inning on a Jordan Luplow double and Wyatt Mathisen fielder's choice to pull away in the victory.
Bernardino (0-3) suffered the loss, as he allowed four earned runs on three hits in just an inning of work. RHP Junior Lopez (3-2) notched the victory and tossed two shutout innings.
Game Two:
The Tortugas didn't allow the Marauders theft of the first game get in the way of their offensive attack in game two. Daytona opened the game by scoring seven runs over the first two innings. Gavin LaValley launched his sixth homer of the year to get the Tortugas on the board.
Daytona refused to let the lead slip away in game two. In the second inning, the Tortugas sent nine men to the plate and scored five times, including a two-run double from Blake Trahan to push Daytona to a 7-0 lead.
Bradenton scored a pair of runs in the fourth inning and a run in the seventh inning but it wasn't enough. In the fifth, Daytona's offense was at it again. Angelo Gumbs laced a double to left field to score Aquino before Duran crushed his first homer as a Tortuga to make it 10-2.
LHP Ismael Guillon (4-2) earned the win in relief by tossing a dominant two innings and racking up four strikeouts. Marauders starter RHP Buddy Borden was touched up for seven runs, five earned, in just 1 1/3 innings of work.
Daytona returns to Jackie Robinson Ballpark on Tuesday, July 26th, to host the Clearwater Threshers in a pivotal North Division battle. LHP Seth Varner (4-6, 3.97 ERA) will make the start for the Tortugas while the Threshers have not named a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m., with coverage beginning at 6:50 p.m. on AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB.
