Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - The Florida State League has announced its top hitter and pitcher for the period of June 8-14, and Daytona Tortugas RF Sebastian Elizalde has been named Player of the Week.
The 23-year-old from Guaymas, Mexico went 9-for-25 (.360) with two home runs, five doubles, eight RBIs, a .429 OBP and an .800 slugging percentage during the past seven games.
Elizalde has driven in 12 runs in his last nine games, and currently leads the FSL with 44 RBIs. Tortugas teammate LF Phillip Ervin ranks second with 38. Elizalde has also hit seven doubles during his current nine-game tear, increasing his total to 19, which is good for second-most in the league.
The Player of the Week honor reflects Elizalde's steady increase in production throughout the season. He hit .235 in April, then .279 in May, and currently has a .298 batting average in June with a season-high 11 extra-base hits.
The biggest of those hits came on Thursday, June 11 in the first half of a doubleheader against the St. Lucie Mets. After the Tortugas had forced extras by plating a run against All-Star closer Akeel Morris - who was called up to the New York Mets on Monday morning - Elizalde ripped a walk-off double down the first base line to give Daytona a 6-5 win. Thursday's heroics continued a trend of clutch hitting; he's now batting .322 with runners on base this season.
From April 22 to May 6, he strung together a 14-game hitting streak, which currently stands as the second-longest in the league. After excelling for three seasons in the Mexican League, Elizalde was signed by the Cincinnati Reds in May of 2013.
He's been a Daytona fan favorite since Opening Day, when he hit a home run in the first at bat in team history.
The Daytona Tortugas currently hold a five-game lead in the Florida State League North Division with seven games remaining in the first half, and can clinch a playoff berth as early as Tuesday. Daytona begins a four-game series at Hammond Stadium against the Minnesota Twins Advanced-A Affiliate, the Fort Myers Miracle, on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. ET. As with every game, fans can tune in to the action on The Great Voice of Volusia County, AM 1230 and AM 1490 WSBB, starting with the D.B. Pickles Pregame Show at 6:50 p.m. ET.
