Palm Beach Cardinals News Release

JUPITER, Fla. - The Palm Beach Cardinals (30 - 34) won the series opener against the Dunedin Blue Jays, 2 - 1. Starting pitcher for Palm Beach, Luke Weaver, earned his first win of the season in quality start fashion. Weaver allowed one hit through six complete innings before passing the ball to Josh Lucas. Chris Perry finalized the win by striking out the side in the ninth inning.

Weaver, who made his sixth start of the season, was long overdue for his first win of 2015. In three of his previous outings, he left the mound when Palm Beach had the lead. Tonight wasn't the case as he powered through six innings, throwing 86 pitches. He gave up the lone hit in the second, but induced a double play to end the inning. After four complete, he faced the minimum.

In the top of the fifth, Weaver and the Beach Birds recorded three outs, but the last batter reached base after the third strike was wild. Weaver walked the next batter putting runners on first and second, but didn't allow them to reach any farther. The last batter of the inning flew out to third baseman, Casey Turgeon.

After six complete, Josh Lucas entered the game to take over on the mound for Palm Beach. In his two innings of work, he allowed one run on two hits and struck out two. Dunedin's lone run came in the seventh after Ian Parmley doubled to score Mitch Nay. Parmley's double was the only of the night between the two teams. Like Weaver, Lucas' last batter flew out to end the inning to complete his third hold of the season.

In the last inning, Chris Perry was called to the mound to try for his seventh save of the season. In 11 pitches, Perry struck out the side, securing the win for Palm Beach.

Between the teams, Palm Beach and Dunedin combined for seven hits with four of those being produced by the Beach Birds. Two of those four hits came in the third inning, the same inning the Cardinals scored their first run. Juan Herrera reached on a single and moved to second on Turgeon's first hit of the game. Herrera advanced to third on Robelys Reyes' batted ball, and crossed home plate after Dunedin's starting pitcher, Jeremy Gabryszwski, threw a wild pitch.

Palm Beach added the second run in the sixth inning on Brett Wiley's ninth RBI of the season.

The Cardinals will continue their four game series with the Dunedin Blue Jays on Tuesday, June 16, for game two. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m. To purchase tickets, please call (561) 630-1828 or visit RogerDeanStadium.com.
