Torquato sets new assists record in 3-2 loss at Guelph

The Erie Otters completed the road portion of their regular season with a 3-2 loss at the hands of Guelph Storm Friday night at Sleeman Centre. Zack Torquato set a new Otters single-season record with his 61st assist but a third period goal with the Otters down by two men gave the Storm the victory.

After a scoreless first period, the Storm struck first as Tyler Carroll scored 3:39 into the second to break the ice. Derek Holden tied the game at 9:44 as his blast from the high slot found its way under the left pad at Brandon Foote for his 11th goal of the season.

The Storm took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission after Matt Maione kept the puck in the Otters zone at the left point and fired a shot that bounced wide, only to return to Conor O'Donnell at the top of crease, and the overager poked it in at 14:33 to give Guelph the advantage.

In the third period, Greg McKegg tied the game 3:59 into the third when his shot from the top of the left circle rang under the crossbar for his team-leading 37th goal of the season, which was set up by Torquato after he kept the puck in the zone at the left point. The assist was Torquato's 61st, setting a new single-season record that was initially set in 1997-98 by Colin Pepperall.

Matthew Sisca iced the game for the Storm at 7:02 on the two-man advantage as he put the puck into the open net on the glove side of Adam Courchaine to seal the victory for Guelph.

Foote made 38 saves in the victory for Guelph, who moved into the sixth spot of the Western Conference with the victory, putting the Otters into seventh.

The Otters close out the 2009-10 regular season with Fan Appreciation Night is tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. when the Otters battle the London Knights to close out the regular season. The first 1,000 fans will receive heart-shaped stress balls courtesy of Hamot Heart Institute. There will also be prize giveaways throughout the evening, and the Otters will wear green jerseys and skate on green ice to commemorate St. Patrick's Day. Following the game, Key West Express will perform in a concert sponsored by Erie General Electric Federal Credit Union. The game is sponsored by Hertel and Brown Physical Therapy, Greenfield Basket Factory and the Northwest Pennsylvania CW.
