AUSTIN, Texas, Nov. 3, 2005 - Bryan Gates has been named the assistant coach of the Austin Toros in the NBA Development League. A former head coach with the USBL and CBA, Gates will work with NBA veteran and head coach Dennis Johnson.

"This is an incredible opportunity and I am very excited to join Coach Johnson and the Austin Toros organization," said Gates. "I look forward to assisting Coach Johnson in building a competitive basketball team as well as the chance to helping the players develop their individual skills."

Gates brings a solid coaching background to the Toros. From 2004-05, Gates served as both head coach and general manager of the Oklahoma Storm of the USBL. Under his leadership, the Storm compiled a 19-13 (.594) record on their way to becoming division champions.

In 2003, Gates coached the CBA's Hickory Nutz to a 23-0 record and was named Coach of the Year. Over a span of six seasons (1999-2005) as head coach in both the USBL and CBA, Gates posted a 108-58 (.650) record and led his teams to three division titles and two championship appearances.

Gates also brings international experience having coached the Blue Stars of Beirut Lebanon to a 21-6 (.777) second place finish in the winter of 2004-05.

Prior to becoming a head coach, Gates worked six seasons as an assistant coach, director of player personnel, and assistant general manager with the Idaho Stampede and Rapid City Thrillers of the CBA. During his stint with the CBA, he served four seasons as the CBA advisor to the Portland Trailblazers.

Gates, 32, attended Boise State University after graduating from West Anchorage (AK) High School.
