AUSTIN, Texas, December 12, 2005 - After a back-and-forth game throughout, the Florida Flame held on for a 95-93 overtime win as a last second two point shot by Austin Toro guard Andre Emmett rattled off the rim in front of 1,660 fans at the Convention Center. The win gave the Flame a split in the two-game series and handed the Toros (2-4) their third home loss of the season.
Florida (4-2) was led by guard Bracey Wright's 23 points to go with five rebounds. Andre Barrett chipped in with 21 points while Dwayne Johnson finished with a NBA D-League season high 21 rebounds (12 offensive) to go with 12 points.
Marcus Fizer led Austin for the second straight night with 20 points on 9-of-15 shooting while Scott Merritt and Ramel Curry added 16 points each. Toros' head coach Dennis Johnson thought the game was a well fought game.
"They got out early on us in the first quarter and got up by eight or ten points and we had to battle back," said Johnson. "After that it was close, back and forth the rest of the way. It was a good game but we had some costly turnovers and gave up far too many offensive rebounds because we were consistently pushed underneath the boards.
The Flame got off to a quick start in the first quarter behind some hot early shooting by Wright. Wright, who finished 8-of-19 from the field, went 4-of-6 in the first quarter to help the Flame build a ten point lead (17-7) with 5:30 remaining in the first quarter. When Wright wasn't knocking down shots, Jones was cleaning up the boards netting six points off of four offensive rebounds in the first.
"Give them credit," Johnson said. "They can jump and were very aggressive on the offensive glass."
The game was fairly tight the rest of the way with neither team able to pull away until overtime when the Flame went on an 8-2 run building what seemed to be a safe lead with only two minutes remaining. However, Toros guard Ramel Curry brought the team and the crowd back quickly with consecutive 3-point plays to cut the lead Flame lead to two points (95-93) with :26 left in overtime.
Wright missed two free throws for Florida before Emmett's shot missed its target.
Austin was out-rebounded by the Flame 55-34 and shot just 14.3 percent (1-of-7) from 3-point land. Austin also committed eight more turnovers (20-12) than the Flame.
In addition to Wright, Barrett and Jones, Theron Smith and Hiram Fuller rounded out the Flame starting five with 19 and 14 points, respectively.
The Toros travel to Fort Worth and will play the Flyers on Friday December 16th at 7 p.m. (CST). The Flame will host the Fayetteville Patriots on Friday as well. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. (EST).
