ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Nov. 12 - The Austin Toros defeated the Tulsa 66ers, 85-67, in the inaugural JAM-BO-FREE exhibition game at Tingley Coliseum. D-League returnees Scott Merritt and Derrick Zimmerman led the Toros to the organizations first win as they scored a team-high 13 points apiece.
The JAM-BO-FREE exhibition games were the first match-up of the 2005-06 season for both teams in the NBA Development League. Following the leagues first cuts on Thursday, Nov. 10, the exhibition contest provided Toros head coach Dennis Johnson as well as 66ers head coach Joey Meyer with an opportunity to observe the final 12 preseason players vying to make the final team roster. Each team will make their final cuts down to 10 by Nov. 17.
"I thought our guys played well," said Johnson. "This preseason game allowed me to see how guys will compete during game situations. It is important for me to have an opportunity to evaluate our players in all situations particularly as we get closer to the start of the season."
In addition to Merrit and Zimmerman, five Toros players scored in double figures including Andre Emmett (12), Ryan Forhan-Kelly, and Randall Orr (10).
The 66ers were led by John Lucas with a game-high 14 points. Bernard King and Desmon Farmer chipped in with 13 and 12 points respectively.
The Tulsa 66ers tip off the 2005-06 regular season home-opener with back-to-back home games against the Albuquerque Thunderbirds Friday and Saturday, Nov. 18-19. Both games begin at 7 p.m.
The Toros inaugural home opener is Saturday, Nov. 26 against the Fayetteville Patriots at 7:30 p.m. at the Austin Convention Center. The regular season tips off Friday, Nov. 25 against the Arkansas RimRockers in Little Rock.
