LANSING, Michigan â The Toronto Blue Jays today announced their minor league coaching staffs for 2005, including the staff for the first ever Blue Jay affiliated team in Lansing.
Ken Joyce, Tom Bradley, Charles Poe and Andrew Muccino will comprise the 2005 Lugnut coaching staff after working together in 2004 with the Charleston (W.Va.) Alley Cats of the South Atlantic League.
Ken Joyce, 40, replaces Julio Garcia as the Lugnuts' manager. The Portland, Maine, native is the 6th manager in franchise history and is entering his second season as a manager in the Blue Jays' farm system. In 2004, he guided the Alley Cats to an 84-56 record and a playoff berth in the South Atlantic League playoffs. The 2005 season will mark Joyce's fourth as a member of the Blue Jays organization and his fifth season out of 13 that he will skipper a ballclub. Previous assignments include a stop in Utica of the New York-Penn League in 1998-99 and last season with Charleston. Overall, Joyce has complied a career record of 187-158.
Tom Bradley, 57, takes over as pitching coach, replacing Mike Anderson. The University, Md., native has been a member of the Blue Jays organization since 2001 and last season guided Alley Cat hurlers to a team ERA of 3.54. Prior to joining Toronto's farm system, Bradley served as the head coach for the Maryland Terrapins from 1991-2000, coaching 62 players that went on to professional baseball. He also guided the University of Jacksonville baseball program from 1979-1990 and saw action in the major leagues from 1969-1975 with the California Angels, Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants.
Charles Poe, 33, inherits the role of hitting coach that had been held by Mike Micucci since 2001. The Ontario, Calif., native has been a member of the Blue Jays organization since the start of the 2003 season and spent the last two seasons as the hitting coach in Charleston. In 2004, the former minor league farmhand saw his hitters collect a .259 team average. Poe played minor league baseball from 1990-2002 in the Chicago White Sox, Oakland, San Diego and Boston organizations, collecting a .267 career average while ascending to the AAA level with the Padres in both 1996 and 1997. Notable career highlights include being traded for Danny Tartabull in 1996 and being replaced on the 1994 Birmingham Barons roster by Michael Jordan.
Andrew Muccino, 30, will join Joyce, Bradley and Poe in Lansing as the Lugnuts' new athletic trainer. A resident of Dunedin, Fla., Muccino will be entering his third year in the Blue Jays organization. Lansing marks his third stop in the Toronto farm system after serving in a similar capacity in Pulaski (2003) and Charleston (2004). Originally born in Connecticut, Muccino attended Barry University in South Florida and the University of Tennessee.
